“Every Ethnic Group Safe Under Me” - Ambode Disowns 'Die In The Lagoon" Speech

The governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress in Lagos, Mr Akinwumi Ambode, on Monday said if elected, he would promote the interest of every ethnic groups within the state.

The Oba of Lagos, Riliwan Akiolu, has come under fire from Nigerians following a report credited to the him that Igbos in Lagos would perish in the lagoon should they fail to vote for Mr. Ambode, his choice for Lagos governorship.

Mr. Ambode is facing stiff opposition from the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Jimi Agbaje, whose party performed well at the March 28 presidential and national assembly elections.

‎”Every group in Lagos will be safe in my hands as governor,” Mr. Ambode said. “I will not discriminate against any religious or ethnic group. It is our Lagos and we must build it together,” he said.

The former Lagos state accountant-general added that he would be a governor for all.

“In my acceptance speech after the primaries I made this note that I will be a governor for all and Lagos is safe in my hands. I want to build on the foundation of unity, peace and progress and development laid by my predecessors.

“And though tongue and tribe may differ, we stand in brotherhood in Lagos from the smallest ethnic groups to the major ones. We are all stakeholders,” the APC candidate said.

  2. Oba Akiolu or however his name is spelt, is not a card carrying member of APC, neither does he speak for APC. He's just one of Ambode's fans like some of us, with one vote. So let's not be distracted. Vote your conscience.

  5. Ambode better gets the Oba to clean up his mess. There must have been something wrong somewhere for Akiolu to be Oba of Lagos. Lagosians had better started digging before it's too late. Nigerians are always ready to embrace change.

  6. Let every Igboman or woman in Lagos vote for whoever that pleases his or her. Oba cannot dictate to people who to vote. I am truly against the statement made by the oba. Infact, if I am to vote in Lagos I will vote against APC because of this statement.

  11. The Oba of Lagos is an embarrassment to traditional leadership in Nigeria. Traditional rulers have no constitutional authority and are not supposed to be openly partisan. Look at the rest of the country. Traditional rulers consistently make it clear that they are fathers to all, and would vote according to their conscience, but would not anoint any candidate. Oba Akiolu has disgraced himself by even coming out to declare that he had anointed a particular candidate.

While Ambode is a decent man, focused, hardworking and capable, this Oba Akiolu has become a liability to him. I am seriously reconsidering voting for him as I now see him as simply a stooge. Fashola became governor with the anointing of Tinubu, but at some point he bacame a man of himself. I wonder if Ambode would ever be able to do that.

  12. The Oba of Lagos in an attempt to intimidate the igbos resident in Lagos has threatened to kill igbos if they vote for Jimi Agbaje for Governor. No body can test the resolve of our people. Igbo bu igbo let us now show our electoral worth and relevance by voting for Agbaje. Great warriors of Biafra, please teach this Oba a lesson with your vote. Any igbo who votes for Ambode is a slave. Send this to at least 5 others. Igbo kwenu ! !
