Waba emerges new NLC president as Labour leaders reject Elections result

PRESIDENT of the Medical and Health Workers Union, MHWUN and immediate past Treasurer of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC was in the wee morning Saturday declared new president Congress, amidst protest by some of the contestants including his challenger, Comrade Joe Ajaero of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE.

The aggrieved leaders are presently in a crucial meeting to determine the next line of actions.

Among labour leaders that have rejected the election results included the Comrade Joe Ajaero, two Deputy Presidential candidates, Comrades Isa Aremu and Igwe Achese alongside members of their unions.

They had alleged that the election ab initio was skewed to favour some candidates to cover suspected fraud.

The retuning officer and pioneer General Secretary of NLC, Dangiwar Aliyu while announcing the results, declared that Waba pulled 1, 695 votes of the 3115 votes to defeat his main rival, Joe Ajero from the Nigeria Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) who pulled 1, 140 votes. 3119 delegates from 43 affiliate unions of the NLC were accredited for the election.

But the aggrieved members also lamented that some delegates from the South South and South East were disenfranchised to favour other ‘anointed’ candidates who would cover ugly tracks.

  1. The aggrieved members should eschew bitterness and accept outcome of the result in good faith. If Ajero had worn the election, he wouldn't have protested. He should demonstrate spirit of sportsmanship in the interest of peace. Where two people contest election, one must emerge as the winner. God's decision is final.
I congratulate Mr. Waba for winning in the credible election.
