The North miscalculated by placing their hopes on Tinubu – Doyin Okupe

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, on Friday said as far as the forthcoming general elections were concerned, politicians from the Northern part of the country had miscalculated.

Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), a Northerner, is contesting against President Goodluck Jonathan (a Southerner) of the Peoples Democratic Party in the march 28 presidential election.

Okupe, who spoke to journalists in Abuja, said the Northern politicians got it wrong because they erroneously believed that a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is the leader of the Yoruba race and that he could deliver the South-West to his party.

He said while doing that, the North left out some of the people that really mattered in the zone, whom he described as the North’s former allies.

He said, “The North has always had partnership in the South—in the South-West, South-South and South-East.

“But somehow, the North miscalculated this time around because they assumed wrongly that Bola Tinubu was the leader of the Yoruba race, and that if they can strike a deal with him, they have got the South-West.

“While doing that, they left their former allies that included Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo, Richard Akinjide, Olunloyo and others.”

Okupe said even if Buhari wins the presidential election, which he said was impossible, the North would still lose out.

He said if Buhari wins, he would not be able to do second term, therefore giving room for a Southerner to again emerge as the President in 2019.

He wondered if the North would be satisfied with only four years when they could have their full eight years from 2019.

Okupe said, “Even if Buhari wins this election, which is impossible, he cannot do a second term.

“So, when the second term comes, why would other people not contest against him? He is a Northerner and if he cannot run for election again, then, the thing should go back to the South. So, would the North be satisfied with only four years?

“These are the issues. That is why I am saying this 2015 election is beyond Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari. It is a matter of national stability.”

  1. Okupe's comment is highly incoherent and this proves the disarray in his party. Let him keep this unsolicited advise to himself. The South West has not benefited anything from the PDP-led Federal government and will vote General BUHARI on March 28, 2015. Not again, will anybody hoodwink any section of this country into believing unfounded allegations. We are tired of statements that whip up tribal or religious sentiments. The choice of GMB has become a movement beyond any one man, not even GMB can stop it. Is Okupe now the spokesman for the North? Or is he already conceding defeat to APC?

  4. Doyin, the Ijebus can not place their trust in you. You are only relevant to the point of being used for dirty jobs. Remember that you once over rated yourself by believing you could be the governor of Ogun state. Have you forgotten that Tinunbu was not just the governor of Lagos for eight years, he had helped in installing governors in all the states in South west. If such a man can not be relied upon, then I wonder who else. Tinunbu is not a saint but he is a better character that you and most of your co-travellers. He has shown that he is a better politician.

  7. If Buhari becomes President now, by 2019 he will be 78. Who says he cannot be reelected for another 4 years then? What Nigerian needs now is a President who will strenghten our institutions, make them truly independent and efficient, provide employment for our youth, uninterrupted power supply, ennabling environment for investors, security for every Nigerians, restore our national values and return Nigeria to the part of Glory. Not the transformation we only hear on television and read in the newspapers.
