Somebody said I am a Christian and I should forgive Buhari, but I can't - Afenifere leader, Ayo Adebanjo

Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, says he can never forgive the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), because of the sins he committed against Yoruba leaders while he was head of state between December 1983 and August 1985.

The 87-year-old, who was a close associate of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, said Buhari locked up all the Yoruba governors after overthrowing the Shehu Shagari government.

Adebanjo said this at a post-National Conference in Lagos titled, ‘Into tomorrow and beyond’ on Thursday.

He said, “Back then, Awolowo warned Shagari that his government would soon hit the rock if he did not put things in order. Shortly after, in December 1983, Buhari overthrew the government but the man that was speaking against Shagari (Awolowo), was harrassed by Buhari.

“Buhari picked up all the Yoruba governors: Adekunle Ajasin (Ondo State); Olabisi Onabanjo (Ogun) and others, who were true progressives and locked them up.

“Somebody said I am a Christian and I should forgive Buhari but I said I cannot forgive such. Ajasin’s children say they have forgiven Buhari but I am not in their party, I can’t forgive him.”

Adebanjo said the North was against the implementation of the resolutions of the confab because the region was enjoying the system which is unfavourable to southern Nigeria.

He, therefore, urged Yoruba to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan next week as he had promised to implement the report of the confab.

He also dismissed claims that he and other Afenifere leaders had been bribed by Jonathan.

He said, “I am saying vote Jonathan not because he is Ijaw or from the South-South. No northerner will convoke a national conference because everything we are talking of that has been unfavourable to the South; they (North) are the beneficiaries.”

Goodluck is selling our future only God knows how much he has squandered in billions since he started campaigning. Let's secure our future and that of our children and forget about the past sir.

  4. Whatever, don't forgive him. Who gives a monkey what u do ! Life goes on with or without Afenifere. Buhari will still win even thruout the South West. U are too old and out of touch to recognise the change that is imminent. U are stuck in the past. Remain there in 1985 and keep whinging about what he did or didnt do to Yoruba leaders then. Buhari never claims to be infallible or an angel. But he is bringing much better things to the table than ur sleepy Jona.
Our own OBJ stayed in power for 8 yrs without nothing solid or tangible to show for it. Stop tribalism and move forward or u get left behind. Majority of Nigerians are clamoring for change in the person of Buhari. Minority groups like yours don't matter much :)

    1. What are the good things he's bringing to the table? why are a good number of Nigerians not fore sighted! Why can't we read situations? And be able to predict beyond the present! Anyway, there is no way someone like Buhari and Tinubu will rule this country. It's not gonna happen.

  6. Well, at 87, ur future is bleak, cos if u cant forgive after 30 years, I doubt God will forgive you for your many sins, even though people directly affected have buried the hatchet

  7. remember those directly affected have started forgiving him.

  8. You are 87, pls seek Gods forgiveness first for betraying the Yorubas. Buhari does not need your forgiveness.

  9. In Christianity, unforgiviness is a sin that leads to eternal damnation. When you don't forgive another man's trespasses God will not forgive your trespasses too . If you forgive a man you release your self.

  13. Hmmm....

It is really unfortunate that this kind of reason can be held on to my a supposedly elder statesman.

Even though, it is a common saying that "to err is human and to forgive is divine", it is also crucial that ones reason for vexation should be well informed.

Let this fact be known that the main culprit regarding embarrassment to the person of Papa Awolowo during the regime of GMB was our own Maradona of Minna IBB. It was while IBB was already contemplating on overthrowing GMB having known that Idiagbon will be proceeding on the Lesser Haji soon, that he deliberately took security operatives to conduct a search on Papa Awolowo without the knowledge of GMB.

By this, if there is any person that this our Elder wants to hold an everlasting grudge against, it should be IBB.

Also, it is a know fact that people like Oladipo Diya also used GMB name to settle series of their own personal scores with fellow Yoruba Elites who they felt oppressed them in the past say taking their girl friends etc.

By this, nothing as our Elder demonstrated a myopic sense of historical facts, he has also shown that he own personal interest and feeling is far above the interest of the Nation.

A Yoruba popular saying quotes "If for the sake of the Palm Oil we do not want to eat the Yam, at least for the sake of the Yam, we should eat the Palm Oil" which other words means we need to consider wider interests in making far reaching decisions.

Majority of Nigerians missed it back in 2011 when they did not properly seek the fact of God in order to have duly realize that "Jonathan is Nothing But The Shagari of This Our Era" in order words, Jonathan will make Nigeria worse than Shagari ever did and also Jonathan will commit greater leadership atrocities than Shagari that hears that hear the atrocities will tingle.

During Shagari's time, we never had Religious nor Regional polarization to such criminal level. Now Jonathan nothing is his Government much more astonishingly corrupt than Shagari's Government, Jonathan has also successfully polarized Nigeria along Religious and Tribal Lines to an unprecedented level in the History of our Dear Nation Nigeria.

Surely, God will judge everyone either canvasing for GEJ or making efforts to mislead Nigerians into believing that GEJ has anything at all but destruction to offer Nigeria.

    1. You have said it all and shed more light on this matter. I raise my hat to u for this well informed message. God bless u brother. God bless Nigeria. I hope those who are still blinded by tribal favoritism can see the truth and really see what Jonathan really stands for and vote him out so we can move this nation forward for us younger generation and posterity. Thank u

  14. My Question to u sir, what is d essence of the confab in the 1st place? Is it not to restructure the short comings of the nation. After spending so much of our resources to conduct it, He's now using it as a bait to get our votes. Sir, pls help us to tell GEJ is not necessary to implement it, som1 will come and implement it Confab should not b a base to get our Vote and morover does he have the veto power to implement such documents without getting 2/3 of the National Assembly votes. Nigerian shine ur eyes oooooo. #March4Buhari #OtuokeLoading

  16. Pa Adebanjo is dealing with a foolish generation that is ready to mortgage the future of their children's children because they refused to learn from history. Majority of these boys and girls are so foolish that they think Buhari is their god on earth. Even when Pa Adebanjo is reminding them of the evil that Buhari has done in the past, their foolishness won't allow them to reason properly.

    1. You're the number one of the foolish generation your baba @87 has not forgiven ofence of 30 years back. If he dies now can he make heaven? And if you're a good child with fear of God you should know how best to counsel your selfish father who has mortgage out your future in exchange of JONATHAN's dollars!

  17. Baba, you will die an angry and ugly old man. God doesn't welcome such people in his kingdom.

  18. The youth of this day never regard anybody. Politic has been to an arena where mischievous behaviour is the other of the day. Youth, respect the elders because of your tomorrow.

  19. Now, who's more foolish? Is it we the youth that will not allow the past to affect our future or you that dwell in the past and allowing the past to affect your future ask yourself. The past is nothing but enemy of the future.

Anyway, you're not speaking the minds of YORUBAS, and POSTERITY will never forgive you if you try to stop the wind of change that's blowing across the country.
