Northern Youth Council Supports Jonathan, Signs Peace Pact With Ijaw Group

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria has endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan while signing a peace pact with the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide to promote peaceful conduct before and after the general elections.

Isah Abubakar and Udengs Eradir signed the pact in Kaduna on Sunday on behalf of the two groups.

Abubakar, who is the President of the Northern Youth Council, urged youths to shun sentiments and work toward averting violence in the forthcoming elections.

He said youths from the North and South must come together to articulate issues and come up with a template to prevent post election violence.

He added that the initiative to sign the agreement was to promote peaceful and rancour-free polls.

On his part, Eradir, the President of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, said the polls must not be allowed to polarise the country.

He said that the youth must unite and serve as bridge for peace and solidarity in the country.

Eradir canvassed support for Jonathan’s second term and assured that the Niger Delta people would not cause any crisis, if the president failed to retain his seat.

“We only condemned attack on the President,” he said and called on youths to shun all forms of violence and accept whoever emerged the winner of the election.

Alhaji Yarima Shettima, the National President, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, lauded the initiative by the two groups.

Shettima said it was imperative to prevent the youth from allowing themselves to be used as thugs by selfish politicians.

He added that “what is important is the peace of the country, without peace, there can be no development.”
