Nigerians React to OPC, PDP Thugs rampage in Lagos

The Oodua Peoples Congress(OPC) and the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation in Lagos on Monday morning led other protesters to storm the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, demanding the sacking of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, before the March 28 elections.

They also asked that Card readers not be allowed for the elections.

While at it, the Hoodlums destroyed posters of the APC along the etire stretch of the road as they moved along.

The bus of the campaign group and the members of the OPC, who massed at the 7UP/Toll Gate end of the expressway, led the protesters, who were chanting anti-Jega songs, giving reasons why Jega should be sacked.

The OPC members carried guns, cutlasses, pocket knifes among other weapons, occupying one end of the busy highway while some members of the groups harassed some motorists and passers-by plying the road.

Some people, who were clad in black vest, said to be beneficiaries of the SURE-P, also constituted a sizable portion of the protesters.

Heavy traffic built up along the highway as the protesters, who were well protected by heavy police presence, took over one partof the road, grounding movement of other road users.

The protesters took time to distribute leaflets containing seven reasons why the INEC boss should be sacked.

The leaflet also contained what the OPC described as the achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan and why the President should be re-elected.

The protesters are said to be on their way to the National Stadium, Surulere, through the Ikorodu Road, where they will hold a rally.

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra on Friday protested in Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, among other locations in theSouth-East, calling for the immediate removal of Jega.

On Sunday, the All Progressives Congress alleged that it had uncovered a plot by its Peoples Democratic Party counterpart to fund ethnic militias to protest and demand Jega’s sacking.

It added that such ethnic militias included the OPC.

While at it, the hoodlums took to destroying posters, banners and anything that had APC on it.

This unfortunate incident took place while Military and Police escorts provided cover for th hoodlums. An Army van can be seen in the picture above.

  3. Isn't it crystal clear now that Jonathan is not peaceful as his followers claim he is? He can only be re elected via vote and not senseless protesting. Remove Jega and put who??? Jona is getting sick from despiracy. And what has the protest got to do with destroying APC posters??? The war that Jona wants in Nigeria, will destroy him and his family first. Maniac

  5. The Presidency must denounce these unbecoming attitudes of ethnic militia. This so-called solidarity for the presidency, is a shameful show of desperation for power, and damaging to the ruling PDP. The centre appears to be crashing at unimaginable rate and casting doubt of who is in charge of governance in Nigeria.

    3. Where were posters destroyed in the North. Please let us not rush to judgement without evidence. GEJ is leading this country to trepidation. This is exactly how it started in Ivory Coast. Let us come together and seek peace.

  11. I went round Bauchi State no single poster of GEJ not to talk of bill board except Tafawa Balewa &Bogoro LGAs. These are the only christian dominated LGAs in Bauchi. To hell with APC. GEJ is still far better than GMB. Jega should bring out the submitted GMB documents if a 1961 WAEC certificate is among the documents! Why wouldn't Nigerians protest? Jega is condoning corruption with impunity and Nigerians must react. We cannot watch the goon destroying our hard earned democracy just like that. In fact this protest should be nation wide.
