Nigeria backs Seychelles’ bid for UN Security Council

Federal Government has pledged support for the candidature of Republic of Seychelles for the United Nations Security Council.

The government promised to rally other African countries to extend full support for the island nation’s bid to obtain a seat on the UN Security Council.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Aminu Wali, said this in Abuja on Friday while receiving the letter of credence of Seychelles honorary Consul to Nigeria, Mr. Tunde Okoya.

He said the country could count on Nigeria’s support when it is ready to contest the coveted position.

Wali, who received Okoya on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan, said Nigeria has a lot to learn from Seychelles in the area of tourism development, environmental protection and climate change campaign.

He identified climate change as a real threat against Seychelles as an island nation and also expressed confidence that the new consul would perform well and strengthen the bond between the two nations.

Wali said, “Africa would support Seychelles’ candidature for the UN Security Council seat. Nigeria would extend full cooperation and support for the nation. I believe the consul has a lot to offer, looking at his pedigree.”

Okoya stated that his accreditation marks the beginning of a new dawn between his country and Nigeria, noting that Seychelles had benefited from Nigeria’s leadership in Africa, as a provider of technical manpower to other countries.

According to him, Seychelles has advantages in tourism and fishery, adding that his country has over 500 tourist spots and a well developed and thriving hospitality industry.

“Seychelles has been playing a leading role against piracy in Africa and we are in the vanguard of environmental protection and the third country in Africa in standards of living; we are planning to contest the UN Security Council seat and we are consulting our allies and partners on it,” Okoya said.
