Five of the nine serving governors seeking to go to the Senate have scaled the hurdle defeating their closest rivals to clinch the seats in the respective districts.
Four others who equally ran could not achieve their ambition as they were defeated in the race.
Those that made it to the Senate are Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano, Aliyu Magatakrada Wamakko of Sokoto, Jonah Jang of Plateau, Godswill Akapbio of Akwa Ibom and Theodore Orji of Abia State.
Those that crashed out are Mallam Isa Yuguda of Bauchi, Muazu Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Saidu Dakingari of Kebbi and Gabriel Suswam of Benue.
The number of governors that failed to make it is high considering the weight they pull in their states.
Most of those that were defeated lost to the clamour for change in some of the states while those that won have either the power of incumbency or the same factor of change going for them.
Others who have made it to the next Senate include former minister of aviation, Stella Oduah, former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Usman Bayero Nafada and former governors of Plateau and that of Gombe States, Joshua Dariye and Danjuma Goje.
About 11 governors had indicated interest in going to the Senate in their respective zones but some of them failed to clinch their party’s tickets.
They include Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta and Sullivan Chime of Enugu State.
Meanwhile, Senate President, David Mark will be returning to the upper chamber for the fifth time to represent Benue South Senatorial district.
Mark defeated APC candidate Daniel Onjeh..
In Kano, four-time Senator Bello Hayyatu Gwarzo (Kano North Senatorial District) couldn’t make it to the red chamber for the fifth time. He was defeated by APC’s Barau Jibril, a former House of Representatives.
In Bauchi, Deputy Senate Leader Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lost his bid to return to the Senate as he was defeated by Isah Hamma Misau of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
In Kwara State, former Governor Bukola Saraki was re-elected for Kwara Central, while Senator Shaaba Lafiagi was also reelected for Kwara North. A current member of the House of Reps member representing Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun Rafiu Ibrahim was elected as Senator for Kwara South.
