The Nigerian House of Representatives has warned against the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, by any individual or institutions.
The warning came on Tuesday after a motion, seeking to stop any planned removal of Professor Jega was adopted by the House.
The motion was sponsored by Ali Ahmad, a lawmaker from Kwara State.
There were oppositions to the motion, but they were not enough to pull the needed vote to stop the motion.
Submitting the motion, Mr Ahmed said: “Any alteration to the status quo arrangement in whatever form at this crucial stage will invariably lead to further postponement of the date elections. Further concerned that such threats to tamper with the status quo may take several forms, such as illegal removal of the INEC Chairman”.
But the Deputy Minority Leader of the House, Mr Leo Ogor, opposed the motion, saying that the motion was totally speculative, as the lawmaker was not precise about what was happening or who was planning the removal.
He said that nobody was interested in removing Professor Jega.
Mr Ogor’s opinion was, however, overruled by the Speaker of the House, Mr Aminu Tambuwal, before the motion was put up for vote.
A larger number of the House supported the motion moved by Mr Ahmed, which sought to stop any planned removal of the chairman of the electoral body and it was adopted.
The issue was also echoed by the speaker when he received members of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room at the National Assembly.
Mr Tambuwal rejected the idea of an interim government in Nigeria and the suggestions that the INEC chairman should proceed on terminal leave.
Several members of the opposition All Progressives Congress have alleged that there were plans by the executive to ask the chairman of the electoral body to proceed on terminal leave before the election.
But during a Presidential Media Chat in February, President Goodluck Jonathan said there were no plans to sack the chairman of INEC, saying “the rumours belonged to the garbage world”.

This per-emptive move shows truly that APC has concoted a fraudulent plan with jega to hand power over to Buhari irrespective of the wish of the people. If not, why would APC be crying more than the bereaved?

ReplyDeleteAnonymous 3:06pm you should not follow buhari in everything even in lack of good education and violence. Try not to copy thebad side of him so that you wont break your TV set while watching GEJ's inauguration speech come may 29th.
DeleteAnonymous 306pm. What you don't know is that all the politicians in PDP have left for APC. So have all these politicians been purged of corruption? By politicians I mean those who had no means of livelihood perse before joining politics to make it.
DeleteSometimes I begin to wonder when can one tell the truth in Nigeria and not be misinterpreted or Shunned , Everything the APC have complained or announced to the public have all come to pass which have left me with this conclusion that PDP led government do not always have a plan B.
ReplyDeleteLike Femi Arigbisola said in one of his post in November 2013 that every Nigeria is a criminal the only different is that some steals with their conscience while some steals recklessness although he is now singing the praises of Jonathan I believe the old man knows the truth .
I just hope that God should give us the leadership that we deserved as a nation and not some actor like Ebele Jonathan. let the truth be told we are still where we are in this nation when he became president in 2011 ,
I can take the insult from that one igbo person who posses as anonymous in this forum to insult anyone that counters Jonathan presidency but I will always speak my mind because is a reach country but have not yet understands what development is all about.
