FCT police train officers on election duties

The FCT Police Command has embarked on specialised training for its officers and men to ensure the conduct of free and fair elections in the territory, FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu, has said.

The CP made the statement on Sunday in Abuja at an interactive session with the media organized by ‘1 Nigerian Initiative’ an NGO.

He said the training was organised for the personnel of the command to know their roles and responsibilities during the elections.

He added that other security agencies were also involved in the training in the “spirit of inter-agency collaboration.”

Inalegwu listed the security agencies to include the Department of State Security, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Commission amongst others.

He said apart from the military whose role would be restricted during the elections, other security agencies that would man the various polling centres would participate in the training.

“When we are deploying, we deploy in such a way that the officers can deal with threats in their particular area,” he said, and commended the cordial relationship among security agencies in the FCT.

The CP said peace accord had been signed by all the contestants in the FCT.

He said the signing of the peace accord was part of efforts to ensure that the March28 election that would hold within the territory was peaceful.

He said he had a meeting last week with all the Imams in the FCT during which they unanimously expressed desire for peace before, during and after the general elections.

He added that he would meet with representatives of Christian Association of Nigeria during this week for the same purpose.

Inalegwu urged private citizens and corporate organisations in the territory to install Closed Circuit Cameras in their homes and places of business to help in effective policing.

The CP said he was discussing with commissioners of police in the states that have borders with the FCT in order to ensure that criminals in their areas are curtailed.
