Fashola says Jonathans Visit to Lagos Hampered Police response to Lekki Robbery

Governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has held President Goodluck Jonathan, responsible for the death of three policemen and civilians during an armed robbery around Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge.

The robbery occurred on Thursday, March 12, when the policemen engaged in a firefight, armed men that went to rob a First City Monument Bank in Lekki, Lagos.

According to Fashola, the President’s planned visit to Lagos led to the low number of available policemen on hand to take on the armed robbers.

Fashola made the accusation on Thursday night at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos, during the All Progressives Congress event, tagged: ‘An Evening For Nigeria’.

During the event, the governor said: “.Because Jonathan was coming to Lagos, all the vehicles and police in Lagos were sent to be on standby for him, and there was no available not enough to stop the robbery at Ikoyi-Lekki link bridge.”

“Perhaps what would be would have been, but it’s sad to see all our security personnel, all our security vehicles deployed to protect one man,” said Mr. Fashola, who spoke at an event, An Evening with Buhari and Osinbajo, in Lagos.

“All the vehicles we bought for the police were stationed to receive the President in Lagos. Those policemen have children and tonight their mothers will have to explain to them why daddy is not coming home.”

Mr. Fashola requested a minute of silence for the deceased officers.

Mr. Jonathan visited the Nigerian Stock Exchange in Lagos on Thursday to launch a new online mobile platform, X-Gen, to increase global investment.

Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who is Mr. Jonathan’s main challenger in this month’s election, was also in the state to meet a gathering of young people at a programme tagged, Secure the Future: Discussing the Future with the Youth.
The APC candidate was, however, absent at a later event where he was scheduled to meet young professionals and entertainment personalities.

In 2011, while receiving six patrol gun boats from the Lagos State government, Yakubu Alkali, then Commissioner of Police, said that the boats would be deployed to Marina, Apapa, Ijora, Atlas Cove, Lekki Phases 1 and 2, Ibafon, Epe, and Badagry.

“It is only hoodlums who want to commit suicide that will dare take on the Marine Police,” Mr. Alkali said at the time.

“These gun boats are not only high-tech, they are fast, highly maneuverable and deadly; faster and deadlier than anything the hoodlums can ever boast of.”

    1. You and your GEJ are the real failure. Police is federal so the governor is not responsible for anything at all.

Anytime GEJ Visits, thousands of Policemen and Hundreds of Patrol Vans are diverted. The RRS Squad for Lekki were withdrawn.

    2. You should be ashemed of yourself for your comment.
Using this robbery incident as a campaign stunt makes one to wonder if Fashola was not the person that planned the robbery.
Was Jonathan in Lagos at the time of the popular Ajah robbery, the airport bureau de change robbery and the host of other incidents?

    2. Yesterdays own was peculiar, Everybody knows that the waterside is dangerous as we dont have marine Police, It happened in UBA a while ago since then, there are at least 4 Patrol Vans around that Area, yesterday, those vans were withdrawn to welcome Jonathan, leaving the area Vulnerable. the robbers knew that.

    4. it does, The Policeen were exposed and there was no backup, there is no way in Hell it woulda happened if those Vans with their policemen were in Place.
It is unfortunate that it is election time, but the truth must be told. I would blame the CP not Jonathan himself. the CP would then be able to tell us why it happened.

  6. I passionately hate Jonathan tenure but to be honest, we shouldn't blame Jonathan for dis. The Commissioner of Police should have prepare a backup Police to secure the area. But in all, the government need to be blame cos a police man told me they haven't been paid 3month salary. Now tell me how u want police to give u 30% security.

  7. Must we politicise everything. Fashola has lost his brain.

  8. I hope tomorrow him and Liar Mohammed will not tell us that GEJ is the one who sent the robbery.

  9. And Buhari's visit did not get security cover. It is only in Nigeria that supposedly learnt men like Fasola can catapult a sad situation to political gain and at the end expose his foolishness to the public. See what desperation to get power at all cost could cause a man to descend so low?

  13. Haha Nigerians the way you criticize the president of the biggest black nation is worrisome.Nigeria eye the way and manner people use your medium to insult the president is that worrisome.the president allowing freedom of speech in Nigeria does not make him a weak person, some of the people insulting the president can not speak if some person is the president because they would have been in the prison.so let us not abuse the freedom we have today.
