APC drags Patience Jonathan to ICC over hate speech

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) has made a formal complaint against Mrs. Patience Jonathan, wife of Nigeria’s president, who during a rally in Calabar, Cross River State last week, called on PDP supporters to “stone” anyone who came to the state chanting change.

The letter of complaint signed by Rivers State Governor and Director General of APCPCO, Rt. Hon Rotimi Amaechi, will on Monday, 9 March be dispatched to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police (IG) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), among others.

According to Governor Amaechi, “Change, as the entire country must know by now, is the slogan of the APC – the rallying cry of a political party that wishes to bring hope of greater and better things to come for Nigeria and Nigerians. By her statement, Mrs. Jonathan was clearly calling on PDP supporters in Calabar to attack supporters and campaigners of the APC in the state.”

The APCPCO likened some of Mrs. Jonathan’s inciting statements and conduct during this political campaign season, to those of Mrs Simone Gbagbo, wife of the former president of Cote D’Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo, prior to that country’s 2010 election. The ICC indicted Mrs. Gbagbo for her part in planning to perpetrate brutal attacks – including murder, rape, and sexual violence, on her husband’s political opponents in the wake of the 2010 election.

Mrs. Jonathan does not occupy any formal office in the Nigerian government, as the position of First Lady is not recognized by the Nigerian constitution. But Mrs. Gbagbo’s case shows the ICC’s awareness of how someone beyond formal governmental and military hierarchies can be identified as responsible for serious international crimes.

The APCPCO pointed out that Mrs. Jonathan’s incontrovertible hate speech not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also goes completely against the Abuja Peace Accord jointly signed by the two presidential candidates, General Muhammadu Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan – a gesture which is aimed at forestalling violence before, during and after the 2015 elections.

“PDP supporters in the state who may not know better could easily yield themselves to the First Lady’s admonition and embark on a process of wanton stoning and other attacks against APC members,” Governor Amaechi said.

The APCPCO also called on the Nigeria Police to put in place emergency measures to protect the life and property of APC members in Calabar and the entire Cross River State.

    1. Ichie... The first lady's statement is to the detriment of our nation's peace. It has nothing to do with any of the leaders competence . Besides none of them can actually give us the quality of leadership we need. Do we shouldn't shy away from condemning the first lady's style of campaign, because she doesn't care about the people..

  8. Ameachi the change you are talking about APC cannot come because all of you in APC have stain of criminality. The First Lady have the right to do her campaign like Ameachi speaks in APC campaign insulting GEJ why was he not arrested by Mr President t, The APC Representatives are troublesome fouls that want to plug this Country into another civil War in 2015.. Our First Lady is right , Ameachi should go back to Rivers and resolve the Rivers Problem and stop attacking Patience Jonathan and Making a foul of himself and APC.

    1. I really do wonder what you understand by insult... is it when someone says what a person does, it then amount to instult... Amaechi is always saying the evil GEJ is doing to this country which we have come to see to be true; does that translate to insult... as for this CANTANIKEROUS WOMAN you call your first lady I reserve my comment till after the election ... if fear will let PDP conduct the elections #bringbackourgirls

  14. Fellow Nigerians this action of APC shows clearly that it is a tyrant government. It does not have large heart to accept insult. Our current president have being seriously insulted in many ways. I have seen several christmas song they cartooned him with. Amaechi, Buhari have released a lot of hate speech againt our beloved president. People have being paid to stone Mr. President by the APC. Yet the people are free to go about. Even journalist have written terrible lies against him and nothing happened to them. We all know that Buhari have been using several hate statement against him before now, so when Patience Jonathan reteirated and they could not take it. IT SHOWS CLEARLY THAT BUHARI AND APC HAVE NO LARGE HEART LIKE GEJ TO ACCEPT INSULT. THIS IS THE REASON WHY YOU MUST VOTE THEM OUT. BUHARI'S GOVERNEMENT WILL ABUSE FREEDOM OF SPEECH. I pity journalist the most. In the beginning it will seem that all is well, but latter you will see the true colour. At that time it is too late. The only way you can stay alive is to shout Hail Buhari! Hail Buhari! Hail Buhari! I pity most some respected pastors that are unequally yoked with unbeliever. That time thier eyes will open and they will see what they have done. However it is too late. FELLOW NIGERIANS THIS ACTION SHOW CLEARLY THAT APC GOVERNMENT HAVE NO LARGE HEART TO ACCEPT OPPOSING SPEECH LIKE GEJ. IT SHOWS THAT IT WOULD BE A TYRANT GOVERNMENT. THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE OF YOUR CHILDREN AND VOTE WISELY. One good quality of a good leader is to accept and absorb insult. That is the example Christ himself portrayed. Despite he the fact he have the power to turn things around, he allowed us to crucify him.
