The persistent fuel scarcity and the search for the product led to a fight on Wednesday as motorists queued for petrol at the Total filling station on Arab Road in Kubwa, a suburb in Abuja.
Trouble started on the queue around 2.30pm when the owner of a white Toyota Corolla car circumvented the queue, bypassing many vehicles on the line illegally and made his way straight to the gate of the petrol station.
The act sparked anger among the hundreds of motorists on the queue, as many had spent over eight hours on the queue just to get fuel for their vehicles.
The owner of the white Corolla was gently asked to move his vehicle out of the gate and join the queue, but he refused.
Another motorist, who lost patience while appealing to the obviously adamant man, pulled an abandoned tyre of a heavy duty truck and used it to barricade the Corolla from gaining entry into the filling station.
This, however, turned out into a fight between the two fuel seekers, while other motorists on the queue swiftly intervened by inviting armed police officers.
The situation was however calmed as soon as the police men arrived.
Meanwhile, the scarcity of petrol continued in Abuja on Wednesday despite promises by the Federal Government.
Hundreds of motorists spent long productive hours queuing for fuel at the few petrol stations that sold the product in the Federal Capital Territory.
In the city centre, satellite towns and remote villages, the queues persisted.
Visibly angry motorists pleaded with the government to address the situation fast and save Nigerians from the agony of queuing at filling stations for prolonged hours.
“When will the suffering in Nigeria end? Can any government get it right especially in terms of fuel and power supply?” were the questions of a motorist, who simply gave his name as Kingsley.
The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Joseph Dawha, had told journalists in Abuja on Monday that the rush for fuel was mainly panic buying.
Many motorists, however, faulted Dawha’s claim. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
