US condemns postponement of Nigeria elections

The United States government has expressed ‘deep’ disappointment by the decision to postpone Nigeria’s presidential election, which had been scheduled for February 14.

A statement by U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, shortly after the announcement of the poll shift by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, on Saturday, said political interference with INEC is unacceptable.

Mr. Jega, while announcing the shift, said INEC’s decision follows a letter from security agencies informing the commission that security cannot be guaranteed if the elections go ahead as scheduled.

He said the Nigerian military is currently engaged in operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the north-eastern part of the country.

“Last Wednesday…the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) wrote a letter to the Commission, drawing attention to recent developments in four Northeast states of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe currently experiencing the challenge of insurgency.

“The letter stated that security could not be guaranteed during the proposed period in February for the general elections,” Mr. Jega said.

But the U.S. government in its reaction said “it is critical that the government not use security concerns as a pretext for impeding the democratic process”.

Mr. Jega had also on Saturday announced new dates of March 28 and April 11 for national and state elections.

The US said the international community would be watching closely as the Nigerian government prepares for elections on the newly scheduled dates.
“The United States underscores the importance of ensuring that there are no further delays.

“As I reaffirmed when I visited Lagos last month, we support a free, transparent, and credible electoral process in Nigeria and renew our calls on all candidates, their supporters, and Nigerian citizens to maintain calm and reject election-related violence,” Mr. Kerry said.

    2. After your moles and traitors in the millitary have been used by GEJ to discretely remove GMB's certificate in his millitary file. How did they know it is no more there and they are hammering on his cambridge o/level certificate? Not to worry the truth will be revealed just as the rigging of Ekiti Election with the help of corrupt military personnel has been finally revealed. Its just a pity that GEJ is just destroying our military institution just for selfish purpose. CHANGE is near and is here. MARCH4BUHARI is On.

    4. US should not openly show their support for Buhari as this will tilt some fence sitters sympathy to PDP
They ought to remember that Nigetia is a sovereign nation and should be left to govern themselves
Police man of the world that refused to support the county to defeat the Boko Haram

  5. One may be miffed at the postponement of the election, but then what got me really grossed is the US involvement on this! Why warn Nigeria!? Who the heck do they think they are?! Nigeria is a sovereign state for crying out loud! I do hope Kerry knows the bounds of his power!? I doubt he does! No wonder he was voted the least effective Sec. Of State! I do hope he's not drunk with his little power. How on earth will you use such words he is using on a sovereign state! Your touted help in rescuing the Chibok girls is well felt! (note the sarcasm). Need I remind him that Nig/Us ain't trade partners again on oil/gas. So jerk off naija issues Kerry! And be a bit respectful! Maybe you've been listening and reading too much propaganda coming out of Nigeria!

    1. You are attacking the US for the actions of your own Nigerian government. Everybody, including many responsible Nigerians, are obviously concerned about election postponement. You should be concerned too unless you are working for PDP scam.

    1. The problem is not US. The problem is GEJ mismanagement and manipulation.

Would GEJ guarantee anybody security in the new date?

  7. I think that US is really against the Nigerian Administration or they are trying to incite people and cause war in our country. Why haven't they asked the opposition candidate why he lied in his oath, why haven't they asked him why it is taking him time to verify the controversial certificate as it is in our constitution. Do they want to destroy our constitution? They want the election to hold on top of all this tension from all the sides of the country so that the crises will start. If you want to control the world or be the world capital state, you should be neutral and non partisan. I know that GEJ administration is full of corruption and we need a change but the changes should be done in a legal way to protect our constitution. According to the constitution, he shouldn't lie on oath and his COMPLETE AND CORRECT academic qualification (AT LEAST O LEVEL CERTIFICATE) MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE INEC. The constitution cannot just be amended immediately because of the opposition. This is not the fault of Nigerian Government or PDP. If the opposition can verify his certificate from the main source (Cambridge) which we know cannot lie because of their integrity and we are assured that the certificate he presented is the original and not manipulated, he will be qualified to contest. Anyone who goes against this is against the peace of the country.

  8. It is clear that US government want to make do their prediction that Nigeria will disintegrate by 2015, that is why they are doing everything possible to ensure it happens, why did they suddenly refused to buy our oil ? Because we said we do not need their millitry all we needed was Ebola vaccine , why do they want us to have election in some part of Nigeria and in every part? Just to discredit the electoral process thereby causing Anarcy , we are too smart of their desperation to come into Nigeria and occupy the country it will not happen US should mind their business

  9. US is not your problem, Nigerians should out their house in order, it is only when you wash your dirty linen in public that strangers get involved in your business. GEJ is a biiiiiiiiiiig disappointment. And God will show him that Nigeria and her citizens are bigger and more important than him, patience. Why am i not surprised at their lack of conscience.
