US accused of fuelling political tension in Nigeria

Move on Nigeria, a civic action group promoting democracy, transformation agenda and good governance in Nigeria has accused the Obama administration of fuelling political tension in Nigeria so as to achieve the US prediction of Nigeria’s disintegration this year.

In a statement signed by its National Co-ordinator, Mr Clem Aguiyi, the group said “it is interesting that the Obama administration that has refused to do anything to help Nigeria in the fight against insurgency, has continued to publicly magnify every failure Nigeria’s government experienced and also working behind the scene to assist Buhari, who ruled Nigeria with iron fist to unseat the incumbent president. The Obama administration cannot pretend not to know that the Buhari military government was known for harshly cracking down on civil rights, arresting opposition forces, and intimidating critical journalists”.

Meanwhile, the group has also urged former Central Bank governor, who is now Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammed Sanusi II to apologise to President Goodluck Jonathan and the Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke following the audit report on the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), by PriceWaterhouseCoopers, which indicated that only $1.48b was yet to be remitted to the federation account as against $49b alleged by Sanusi as missing.

The group said, as a mark of honour, the onus now falls on the Kano Emir, who as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), raised the initial alarm that led to the probe.

According to the group, the allegation gave rise to more international attention on Nigeria just like the audit report did, adding that with the world watching, those who initially raised the allegation, and indeed, “all those who reached judgemental conclusions, ought to swallow their pride and tender public apology to the president, the minister and also the senate of the Federal Republic”.

“As a group which was in support of the call for a probe, we now feel that having had the result with the allegation of $49billion missing proven to be false, we therefore call on the Emir of Kano, and indeed, all those who worked to heat up the polity and insulted the President of the Federal Republic and the Minister of Petroleum Resources, to own up to their faults and apologise to the nation”, it said.

  3. I think PWC needs to be audited for wide scale international corruption. At this rate I can doubt the authenticity of the report. It is obviously doctored.

  4. Mr Clem Aguiyi, I am very disappointed to hear this sort of rubbish from you. People like you give the Igbos bad name and I'm greatly pained that you can call $1.48 billion "only". Even if it is 1000 naira that is unremitted, should that not call for concern? Mind you that Jonathan hired these auditors and did not allow the auditors tell Nigerians their findings. He took the report and gave it to the Auditor General of the Federation to study and summarise for him. This administration have been lying to Nigerians on several issues of national importance including the rescue of the Chibok school girls, and quite recently, the postponement of the general election which our President claimed he wasn't consulted. And now you want us to believe that what the government announced is true. Please grow up Mr. Aguiyi. Someone petitioned the president about missing money, and rather than investigate while the person was still there in office so he can provide his own evidence, you sacked the person and set up your kangaroo probe. Okay Mr. Clem Aguiyi, can you tell us why $1.48 billion was not remitted? Who is responsible for non-remittance of the said fund and what punishment has this corrupt administration meted to such individual or group of people. Please Mr Clem Aguiyi, note that Nigerians are not as stupid as your mind has deceived you to believe. True Igbos always represent the truth. Stop misrepresenting what we've always believed in "TRUTH" right from the days of our ancestors.

  5. The United States, along with other western countries had pleaded for the election in Nigeria not to be postponed. Yet Jonathan colluded with the military to postpone the election. One week later, Jonathan is asking the US to help it fight Boko Haram. Common sense should have told Jonathan that his request would be ignored. TheUnited States has neither respect nor regard for Nigeria as a result of the unabated corruption in that country. Any surprise that President Obama has not set foot in Nigeria but has visited Ghana, Gambia, etc? We have not earned America's respect, that's the bottom line. America does not like corrupt regimes and that's the case with Nigeria. Jonathan is running all over the country making all kinds of promises if he is elected a second term. The basic question is, if he couldn't accomplish any thing in his first term because of corruption, what do you think he will accomplish when the price of crude oil has nosedived? That's why if God loves us, he will save Nigeria by getting rid of Jonathan through the ballot box, no matter the rigging tool that Jonathan is planning to deploy.
