Trafficked Nigerian Girl Dies In Burkina Faso

A Nigerian girl who was trafficked to the West African country of Burkina Faso has been found dead barely a month after an investigative report exposed the awful conditions she and other Nigerian girls are subjected to in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso.

PM News's Ateba, travelled to Ouagadougou in early January to unravel the booming human trafficking business in the landlocked country.

What he discovered was a sophisticated human trafficking ring that takes girls from Nigeria with false promises of making their lives better in Europe via Burkina Faso.

The victim, known as Gift, was sold the same promises but ended up working as a sex slave in ‘Bar Dancing Petit Ouaga’, a brothel in Toudoubweogo village in Ouagadougou.

Ateba met her on 12 January this year during his investigation but she was found dead mid February.

Gift who hails from Edo state in Nigeria, narrated how she had travelled with someone for three days to get to Burkina Faso in April 2014.

But, instead of going straight to Ouagadougou, she travelled to Dori where gold is being mined manually. Dori is about 271 kilometres from Ouagadougou.

She claimed she was 18 years old but she appeared younger than that. Most girls who are trafficked are taught to say they are 18 years and above.

During the conversation with Ateba, Gift expressed hope that once she has paid the traffickers some money, she would be free to move on with her life.

But she died a week ago, two activists said, as many other trafficked Nigerian girls who have died there far away from their family members, and not close to their dream lives.

  1. This is the result of bad governance. If Nigeria were diligently governed, Gift wouldn't have seen the need to follow bad people to a 'greener pasture'. May her soul rest in peace. All these problems will end when Buhari is sworn in on May 29, 2015.

    1. How you guys believe in this your Buhari! Oh my! Can you guys be serious for once! A rabid quest for power does not in any way translate to love of the WHOLE masses. Their is very little an ethnic bigot can do. A case in point is when he was saddled with PTF agency. Much worrisome is the greedy cabals around him whose intent is to merchandise Nigeria. You guys should really think! Do you really think and believe that they have the best interest of Nigerians more than the one with the power now? I do like as there is a strong opposition now, that at least will jolt the incumbent and make them work harder. But telling me Buhari will do better with all his antecedents and cabals around him!, common! You can tell that to the marines! Even the marines know better now!

    2. The mere fact that those in charge of our affairs are aware that they can be voted out is enough to enthrone good governance. This president is just not competent. If Buhari failed to deliver he will be voted out again.

    3. Oh yes!!! lets break the tradition of people strolling into second term, you must work to be re-elected; the moment we vote GEJ out, the whole electoral process will change... you work you get re-elected... you don't work you get thrown out. GEJ is the worst regime I have ever seen #bringbackourgirls

    4. Obasanjo's regime was much worse than Jonathan's and Buhari's first stint as head of state was much worse than Obasanjos.

  3. Buhari will kill and bury NIGERIA in religious violence. That's not my issue for now but this Gift. I do not pity her even in death. It should sound as a warning to those girls who believe that international prostitution is the only form of making money . Demo state is notorious for this shameful endeavor . Just because some rusty ladies from Edo went to Italy and prostituted with men, animal and serpents and made money does not translate to open doors to every girl to follow. I live in Siena Italy and I feel so ashamed that almost all African prostitues are from Nigeria and Edo in particular . Nigerian ladies here are embarrassing the image of Nigeria. Even the so called big girls who come to Dubai t buy stuff engage in prostitution before they return and maintain a large client base who await their return. I and my friends are compiling full details of these ladies to be made open online soon. I will handle the Italy point and three of my fiends will expose the Dubai front. I am a taxi driver and I see these things.

I do not support prostitution, neither do I condone the desecration of Nigeria's image. But the truth is that of these girls come from very poor homes in a country with no jobs and basic amenities. Like you, they have migrated to seek a better life and survive in any way they can. Many have no education, no training and cannot drive cabs like you. How many of these girls have you helped or are prepared to help if they come to you for succour? Rather than being critical and sanctimonious, I would advice you keep your compilation to yourself and to to strive to contribute in your little way to the improvement of the living conditions in Nigeria so that people like you do not have to leave to seek a better life in other countries.

  8. My dear, I am not disregarding the hard situation in my country as that is why I am driving a cab with two Masters degrees instead of making more money by joining in the drug business here. But any right thinking lady should suspect any man who promises her heaven on earth and paying all fares to come to Italy. We in OUR DEAR NIGERIA ASSOCIATION have written so many times to our embassies and NGOs in Nigeria about the ills of this place. It is on record that we have helped 23 female Nigerians to secure decent jobs here and 36 men in fruit and construction companies here. I am not speaking from a wealthy position but from a struggling one but I am hopeful that if managed well the little I am getting will help my people back home. But the lure of crime and immorality draw my people more. You need to see how many times I am summoned to come and pick a nigerian harlot who has been raped and dumped without pay by her clients, how many times I am called in the midnight to come and help a nigerian stabbed by fellow drug peddlers. Do not condemn me, I am no saint but we can help from home too. These are our brothers and sisters being killed and humiliated. We need to get education , get some skills to compliment it, struggle while trusting in The Lord to swing good fortune our way. Amen.

    1. Very moving contribution. I beleive the State Governments should do more to discourage our girls from being ensnared in this international prostitution ring, especially the Edo State Govt.
