The Lagos State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, says commercial motorcyclists, otherwise known as okada riders, have the right to ply at least 9,000 roads in the state.
Ambode said okada riders should not be swayed by the antics of the Peoples Democratic Party who were deliberately misinterpreting the state traffic law.
The APC candidate said this at the inauguration of the ‘Okada Allowed Sticker Campaign’ organised by the Support Group for Ambode 2015 in Lagos on Monday.
He explained that unlike other states where commercial motorcyclists were banned outright, the APC-led state government only restricted them from 475 roads to reduce the rate of accident.
He said, “There are 9,600 roads in Lagos State; of those roads, 5,650 are owned by the local government areas and states have 3,000 plus. It is only 117 roads that belong to the Federal Government. Of all these roads, only 475 have been restricted. So, over 9,000 roads are free for okada riders to ply. But our detractors are saying that we have banned okada. With these stickers, we will enlighten them of their right to ply on over 9,000 of those roads.
“The restriction is just to secure the lives of our people. We don’t want people to be dying indiscriminately on the Third Mainland Bridge.”
Also speaking, a former Minister of State for Defence, Demola Seriki, who is the chairman of the group, said the APC must continue to work for the victory of Ambode on April 11.
The former minister said it was unfortunate that the PDP was politicising issues like okada restriction, which had drastically reduced the rate of accident in the state. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
