Obasanjo an embarrassment to the Nigerian Military — Defence Headquarters

The Nigerian military has slammed former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an embarrassment to the force he once served, hours after Mr. Obasanjo on Monday announced his exit from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Mr. Obasanjo dumped the PDP at a dramatic event in Abeokuta, Ogun State, a move that appeared aimed at forestalling an expulsion by the party.

The military did not rebuke Mr. Obasanjo for leaving the party. It lambasted the former president over his criticisms of the force’s role in the postponement of forthcoming general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had rescheduled elections from February, to March and April, a decision taken at the instigation of the military.

The former president, who has repeatedly criticised President Goodluck Jonathan and his government, said the postponement of the elections was to further the interest of the president.

A statement by the Defence Headquarters on its Facebook page said the retired general constituted a serious embarrassment to the military before everyone with reasonable judgment of the values and standard to statesmanship.

“It is however noteworthy that most of his utterances lately indicate an attitude of playing to the gallery or indulging in politicization of serious national security or military affairs,” the statement said.

The military said Mr. Obasanjo, a retired general, must understand that Nigeria’s armed forces has developed beyond how he left it, and that the world has moved beyond that “parochial and self-adulating reasoning and mind-set the Mr. Obasanjo seems stuck to”.

“The Nigerian military is now better placed to strive for the maintenance of the legacies and ethos of service, valour, subordination to constituted authorities, and nonpartisan commitment to duty and fatherland,” the statement said.

The DHQ said, “For instance, the comments credited to Chief Obasanjo alleging that the postponement of the General Elections was to enable President Jonathan to use the Service Chiefs to plot a tenure extension is to say the least, very surprising.”

It said that while the military desired to respect the old general and his views, it became necessary to point out that his conduct and utterances of late have fallen short of the standard of discipline expected of an individual who has had the privilege of service in the military.

The statement urged Mr. Obasanjo to encourage the military rather than accuse it of ulterior motives, all for the purpose of discrediting decisions related to the military’s roles in the polity.

It also said unlike many insinuations that the Nigerian military is inept, the institution is neither incapable nor misused for political ends as the Mr. Obasanjo may believe.

    4. You fools, this only further confirms the military as the baby of the ruling PDP. Why now that OBJ has dumped PDP that it will react to OBJ's comments on the military role in the postponement of the elections? A very corrupt military and we pray the military leadership be toppled and dealt with by the younger officers.

  3. The so called Military high command is heavily politicized to the extent that it is now a willing tool in the hands of politicians. No wonder, the military has embarrassingly failed to perform its basic constitutional role of defending the territorial integrity of the Nigerian state so as to enable Jonathan perpetuate himself in power. The blood of innocent Nigerians cries before God for revenge. May God free us from the hands of a criminal gang masquerading as national government.

  5. This further indicates that the Nigerian Military is already compromised.

Feedback is a gift. Criticism should be seen as opportunity to provide clearer and coherent answers to issues bothering Nigeria populace.

This comment from the Nigeria Military is not only incoherent but also highly unwarranted.

Rather than address the serious issue of Brig Gen. Momoh helping PDP to rig Ekiti elections, they are engaged in unnecessary rigmarole.

The World may appear silent, but they have already concluded that Nigeria as a Country is critically and totally morally bankrupt.

This release on the part of the Military confirms that we have totally lost our moral and societal values.

What a big shame for Nigeria.

  11. Let the military just confess. They are reacting now because the man dumped the PDP. Seems our military is now an arm of the PDP led govt. It is clear to everyone that the Nigerian military is living on lost glory and has lost relevance in the defence of her nation among other military of the world due to corruption within their ranks and indiscipline and have now turned to insulting their Generals. Maybe they would insult Buhari next. Rescue the kidnapped girls and secure our borders and stop making noise. That's your Deal with the Federal Republic of Nigeria. You said 6weeks...time is ticking

  14. Funny when i read comments from people advising others not on the same side as them politicall here,The funny thing is if anyone did went and hug an electricity tranformer in Nigeria, they probably would come away unhurt because the transformers are just there mostly for decorations without electricity passing through them.Transformers in Nigeria are not dangerous as they are idle and useless most times. When uffering really hit most nigerian hard under theis PDP no one would tell you the difference betweeen bad and good or right from wrong,it has just started now that companies have started retrenching staff and things are becoming more expensive due to the corruption and mismanagements under the ruling class Cabals

  15. What a shame. This is the height of decadence of our country. No honour in serving your country anymore and now the army who the people respect to be of standard discipline have seen oil money and gone bunkers as well. OBJ is and will always remain a force to be reckoned with. Which other military personnel, serving ir retired has his clout in the international community yet DHQ can respond so. Nigerians where are we heading to............

  16. Illiterate people like you should not be making comments on the net , the president of Nigeria is not just the president of civilians he is also the commander in Cheif of the military and so any insult targeted at their commander in chief is seen as a direct attack on them. The army is not partisan whosoever in chief in chief they will obey the person Obasonjo should have known better Obasonjo is a disgrace not only to the millitry but to the entire nation, even Buhari knows that you dont insult the sitting President why is Obasonjo crying too much unles there iis something he has lost by this election not holding on the 14 Feb which of course is personal not for the interest of the nation.
