Drama as Obasanjo angrily tears PDP membership card in public, dumps PDP

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has reportedly ripped apart his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) membership card.

Obasanjo is said to have torn the card just a day after he accused President Goodluck Jonathan of plotting to frustrate the conduct of the upcoming general elections.

Obasanjo also stated that Jonathan, who is of the PDP, was afraid that he would be jailed by All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari if the latter were to win elections.

The guests, who are leaders of the PDP from Obasanjo’s ward around his former residence in Ita Eko, where he registered, visited the ex-president to express their concern with his recent utterances against the government of President Goodluck Jonathan and what he considered as the President’s role in the postponement of the general elections from February to March.

Obasanjo had alleged on Saturday that Jonathan had a “grand plan” to scuttle democracy in the country through the poll shift, accusing the President of trying to win the presidential poll “through hook or crook.”

The guests in Abeokuta had told the former Head of State that they had come to plead with him to stop his criticisms of the incumbent president.

They also informed him of the feelers that they were getting that the leaders of the party were planning to expel him from the party.

Obasanjo asked his guests if they were with their PDP membership card, which some of them produced.

He subsequently asked for his own, which someone brought to him.

He then directed the leader of the team to tear the card in shreds, telling the visitors that he was no longer a member of the ruling party.

The former president had last year resigned his membership of the party, when he was the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, arguing that he could no longer be in the same party and be led in the South-West by someone he referred to as a confirmed drug baron.

After he had thanked them for their concern and narrated how the Goodluck Jonathan administration had almost run the country aground, he said, “They said they want to expel me from the PDP, although I have not been told that; I have my ears to the ground.

“We have been trying to run away from a mad man but he pleads we wait for him at the other side of the river.

“I have told you before that I became President on the platform of the PDP and once I leave the party, I will not join any other party.

“I will only be a Nigerian, I am ready to work with anybody regardless of political affiliation. Why would some people say they want to send me away.

“They don’t need to bother themselves, here’s your membership card, take it (at this point, he gave the card to Oladunjoye to tear).

As Oladunjoye stood up and tore the card, with Obasanjo watching him closely, the visitors rose from their seats, raised their hands and danced in support of his action.

After the pieces of the card were handed to some of the visitors, Obasanjo said, “From today on, in the presence of all of us and with your support, I am not going to be in any political party in Nigeria.

“I am no more a politician but a statesman, both internally and externally.

“You asked me two questions and I will answer them comprehensively. But before I answer them let me say this. This Nigeria belongs to all of us and it must not be destroyed.

“This is my PDP membership card, where I’m standing is that Nigeria belongs to everybody, including babies. We must not allow anybody to destroy it.

“Wherever they come from, whatever they have and if they destroy it, it becomes a burden to us, our children and the incoming generation.

“The question asked is which party am I? I belong to the group that believes that Nigeria must not be destroyed. Those of you that are traders, will observe that there’s inflation in the country . The Bureau de Change operators used to change a $1 for N150 but it is going to be N250 to a dollar.

“What it means is that, what you’ve been buying for N150 will sell for N250. This is not the kind of country we dream of. There’s no job; no money.

“It is unfortunate that those destroying the country are oblivious of the fact that the PDP exists because Nigeria still exists.

“I will never be in a party that will destroy Nigeria. Without Nigeria, there will be no PDP. What should be of concern to us is how to make Nigeria stronger by making our economy grow .”

Obasanjo, who joined the PDP in 1998, also debunked the allegation that he wanted to head an Interim National Government.

He said, “How can anybody in his right senses talk of ING in a democratic setting? Some of them are working for it. God will not allow it.’’ But almost two hours after he quit the PDP, the Dayo-led executive of the party, said the former President’s ward had in a letter dated February 12, accused him of anti-party activities and uncomplimentary utterances against President Goodluck Jonathan.

  18. Here is a man who Solomon Lar of blessed memory, Alex Ekweme, Jerry Gana and other top PDP officials waived away his inability to deliver his ward, state, and even region to imposed him on us all Nigerians at the expense of MKO Abiola ranting nonsense, lets remind you sir, that you have outlived your political relevance. Why did you choose to launch your book in Kenya and England? because you tried to manipulate history in your book and the Nigerian courts banned it.Today, you re the first Nigerian who your own daughter disowned you and your ex-wife gave a harsh comment about you. Now, the whole respect you once had is washing away so fast. Sorry because of your own attitude of late, am already using my own resources and influence to canvass for more votes for Mr. GOODLUCK JONATHAN, this your action has made me to become a supporter of Mr. President. You re unbearable and intolerable. Shameless old man who does not have an iota of God in him, full of bitterness, anger and hate. It will not take you anyway.

  19. Great post, the earlier we Nigerians see in between the lines the better, on that day, I will not vote because of PDP but because of my candidate, after all am not a card carrying member of any political party, Obasanjo's action is bizarre and inconsequential.

  33. We are funny lots. The old man is grieved not because he's hungry, but because no father will ever be at peace seeing his children trying to destroy the house he laboured so much to build. People quickly forgot that this old man went to prison because he was not ready to be compromised by late Abacha. He was one of the few that stood against Babaginda when he was changing the handing over date at will. He is one of the few that suffered so much for the freedom we are all enjoying today. He's a fighter and age can't change him. He's a democrat, the first military man to handover power to civilian in the whole of Africa. The man is angry because the country is sick and our leaders are celebrating. I'm amazed that we are fast turning to a banana Republic and our elders are quiet. Baba has demonstrated that he is no longer ready to be part of the gangsters that are destroying this nation in the name of politics. There's nothing to celebrate in pdp that a person of his standing will be proud to belong. People must be bold and not hiding as anonymous commentators to insult a man old enough to be their father.

    1. God bless you sir. I don't know when people will really be free in Nigeria. There's so much slave mindset that even in a democratic dispensation some people will like to comment anonimously. If you are so sure of your comment and man enough please own up and let us see your picture and name. Nigeria need change from men without balls.

  37. Its hifh time we go pass politics of political parties rather of individuals, we ar in Democracy for crying out loud where checks and balances is the bane of its structure, PDP has ruled us for d pas 16 years my fellow Nigerians, can we be sincere to ourselves and ask this question wot achievements or benefits had accrued to the poor masses from this 16 years rule of PDP. Change is sth dt is constant, y not lets experience Change n Change if dt is wot it takes until we move our country to the higher ground where it shud have been but has bn truncated by our coruopt leaders. Lets do away wit sentiments of region, Religion and tribe, we are one Nigerial and our focal point shud be the well being of Nigeria bcos witout Nigeria there will be No

  40. Obasanjo has never been a father to Nigerians but to himself (not even to his children). He is a selfish, self-centered greedy man who is agreed because he is not allowed to have his greedy way. God will keep disgracing every hidden and open troubler of Nigeria - those who think Nigeria is their personal property and can be tossed in any direction they want.

  42. It is a very good plus for GEJ nobody believes that he would not be stooge of OBJ but he has proven that he is man enough to take his DECESSIONS ,OBJ is more than 80 yrn old and I am sure he is now reasoning like a child Let's pity him he does not know what he has done to himself very soon he will come back begging just lets wait and see after the election he will come begging GEJ God has ordeened that GEJ will win 1 million OBJ can not stop him

  43. What Obasanjo did must be totally condemn from all quarters. It means he has hidden plans which has been terminated and could not control his mind again.

  44. I can see that pro-Jonathan are more confused than ever. When OBJ sneeze GEJ purge with high blood pressure. I understand he goes for check up every 6 hours now. Those who are using him to make ends meet will soon kill him the way they did to Abacha.
It is very unfortunate that as learned as GEJ is, as 'claimed' he cannot understand simple meaning of DEMOCRACY I action.
Look at his wife that bore no issu for him controlling him like mumu. She went to disturbed APC rally in his Belgium town, sorry I mean okrika village, only for her to end up killing innocent mothers, whose blood will disturbed her till she died.
Come to think of it, GEJ has lost two of his brothers, one sister and one uncle kidnapped and later released after one or two months.
Patience killed her own adopted mother and a house help via motor accident. What is it yet no single child from them. Me think they are cultist.
Let any foolish man or woman answer me now or never. Stupid supporters that use their nyash to reason abi think.
