A statement allegedly from Islamic State group militants says that an American female hostage was killed in Jordanian air strikes outside the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, the group’s main stronghold.
It identified the woman and said she was killed on Friday during Muslim prayers in air strikes that targeted “the same location for more than an hour.”
It published photos allegedly of the bombed site, showing a damaged three-storey building.
The claim, which could not be independently verified, was published on a jihadist tracking group website, SITE Intelligence.
The hostage was an aid worker whose identity was not previously disclosed out of concerns for her safety.
The US on Friday said it could not confirm the reports of her death and was looking into the claims.
Spokeswoman Marie Harf reiterated that the State Department has acknowledged some Americans are being held abroad, including by the Islamic State group, but said she could not provide any additional information.
