Jonathan is not trying to postpone elections – Fani Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode, Director, Directorate of Media and Publicity, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation has said that neither the president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan or his party, PDP is trying to postpone the election.

Nigeria’s main opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed severally that the federal government and PDP are attempting to postpone the election.

“The decisions to postpone or delay the elections ‎are firmly within the purview of INEC,” Fani-Kayode said.

“It has absolutely nothing to do with President Goodluck Jonathan, the PDP or anybody else. We have said all along that we believe that it is important that every Nigerian has the voter card.

“The only thing that we can say is to urge the INEC to ensure that (distribution) is done as quickly as possible,” he told reporters.

The prospect of an election delay was first raised last month by National Security Advisor Sambo Dasuki, who said that INEC should look at delaying the polls because of problems in distributing voter cards.

Kayode Idowu, INEC spokesman has described media reports about a possible election postponement as “completely false”. He however stated that INEC may allow voter ID cards to be handed out after the current February 8 deadline.
