INEC to meet today to decide shift in election date

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed separate meetings with chairmen and secretaries of all registered political parties, and resident electoral commissioners [RECs] for Saturday to decide whether to go ahead with the general elections scheduled for February 14 and 28.

A statement Friday by Kayode Idowu, the spokesperson for the INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, said after the meetings, “the Commission will address a press conference to brief the nation on its decision with regard to whether or not the general elections will hold as currently scheduled.”

Mr. Jega had on Thursday briefed the National Council of States on the preparedness of the Commission to conduct the 2015 general elections.

He made a presentation titled “Preparations for the 2015 General Elections: Progress Report”.
The National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, and the nation’s services chiefs also briefed the Council on the current security situation in the North-East.

Mr. Jega told the Council that his commission was in a better position to conduct election at present compared to its state of preparedness for the 2011 election.

“Compared with the 2011 General Elections, for instance, our systems are definitely more robust. We believe that we are ready for the elections as planned,” Mr. Jega said.

  6. I want to understand the reasons why election should not be shifted? If these GMB's sycophants have gone to collect their PVC they will understand that over 50% of registered voters haven't collected their PVC and they want elections to hold yet still? It is very unfortunate that most of u clamouring for change doesn't even know what u guys are getting ur selves into.

  10. This a clear test of the depth of corruption that has bedeviled our country. If Jega bows then he would have ended up losing all the integrity he has been defending. O God help INEC to do what is right in Jesus' Name. Let election hold as scheduled.

  12. Sincerely the election should be postponed. Conducting the election on the 14 February will be grave injustice against the south as more pvc have been distributed in the north than in the south. How can you be conducting election that will favour only a particular section in terms of voters readiness. the election should only hold when there is equitable distribution of voters card

  13. Election has to be postponed to April since it falls within the ambit of law , most of the PVCs are still with INEC and so many people are disenfranchised if held as scheduled

  18. The war against insurgency that this government failed to fight for over four years cannot be won in six weeks time. If the government were sincere in holding the election as scheduled, government should have released more funds (to employ more ad hoc staff) and before today most of the PVCs would have been distributed. The purported excuses of the incumbent is unrealistic. NO to postponement!!!
