The Inspector General Police, Suleiman Abba, on Tuesday ordered that special security be provided for officials of the Independent National Electoral Commissions, INEC, and its ad-hoc staff during and after the February general elections.
In Abuja, while appraising the preparations of the Nigerian police for forthcoming elections, Mr. Abba directed the Special Forces in the Police, Special Protection Unit, SPU, and Counter Terrorism Unit, CTU, to provide security for INEC officials and their materials.
Also, in a statement, police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said the IGPs directive demonstrates the readiness of the Nigerian police to protect Nigeria’s budding democracy and ensure a free and credible election.
Mr. Ojukwu said the police high command has also put strategies in place to ensure free and fair elections.
He also enjoined the public to work in tandem with the force and report any suspicious movement to the nearest police station. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
