The Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has warned politicians not to visit police stations to seek the release of electoral offenders, stressing that such offenders will not go unpunished.
The IG therefore cautioned politicians to advise their supporters against embarking on violence before, during and after the general elections, noting that the police are ready to do all it takes to conduct violence-free and credible polls.
Speaking during a crucial meeting with senior police officers at the Force Headquarters, Abuja on Monday, Abba stated that the police were investigating inciting statements made by some people and promised to arrest anyone found culpable, adding, however, that such cases were also within the purview of other security agencies.
The IG challenged politicians to respect the tenets of their code of conduct and ensure that the 2015 general elections end peacefully.
He said, “We are here to further strategise on how to allay the fears of members of the public, in particular of the electorate with regards to the exercise of their franchise. I want to say without any hesitation that the police are prepared and would continue to do everything to provide security for the general public.
“Politicians should observe and assist law enforcement officers in making sure that violence do not take place or even handing over their members who are involved in violence. They should make resolution not to seek for the release of their members who are arrested for violence. All these are provided in their code of conduct. So it’s a collective responsibility of all.”
The IG, while acknowledging incidences of violence in some states in the run-up to the elections, explained that arrests had been made and investigations are ongoing.
He cautioned politicians against arming their followers or instigating them into violence, stressing that the police would not condone any breach of public peace. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
