Criticisms of Nigerian military worry me - Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday said he was always worried whenever he heard “unexpected public utterances” being uttered against the Nigerian military.

He said Nigerians must learn to respect members of the nation’s security forces because while they were asleep in their houses, the security men were on the streets making sacrifices.

Jonathan spoke during a presidential dinner he organised in honour of widows of the nation’s fallen heroes at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said he decided to host the widows, the first in the nation’s history, because his government appreciated their husbands who paid the supreme prices while securing the nation.

He therefore asked all Nigerians to continue to appreciate the contribution of the security forces to the nation’s peace.

He said, “Most of you (the widows) would have been surprised that why should the President call us here. It has not happened before. This is the first time that the President would be interacting with the wives of the fallen heroes.

“We appreciate the services of your husbands, your fathers, within the armed forces and other security agencies because we sleep while they are in fears and while protecting the nation some of them paid the supreme sacrifice.

“That is why I personally get worried when some public utterances that are not expected are made of them.

“All nations respect their military and their intelligent services because without these people, we wouldn’t have been here. Without these people, there wouldn’t have been any Nigeria.

“What keeps us together as a nation is the activities of these people. I use this opportunity to call on all of us Nigerians to continue to show gratitude and appreciation to our security services.”

    1. Why do you people hide the truth. Corruption started with millitay government and northern rule that took the country backwards. This same millitary was not provided with millitary equipment because the need did not arise then and when the need arose, the rot in the system over the years became glaring. The force were not taken care of by the government and their so called millitary ogas and poverty was the order of the day in the barracks and bribery became rampant. All Nigerians knew. Besides the millitary has been fighting full fledge war outside the country whereby you can easily identify the enemy and no interest jeopardising their efforts but they became faced with a kind of war that had political, ethnic and religious interest even from the ranks and profile of the army. Jona a civilian was faced with a corrupt system and wrong recommendations and he had to make changes several times to get sincere people that would promote the army and fight this BH war. Pls hatred on no concrete base is detrimental even to the hater. Let's be guided accordingly.
