Card readers will add value to elections – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has maintained that the Smart Card Readers for authentication of voters will add value to the forthcoming general elections.
INEC National Commissioner in charge of Ondo, Osun and Lagos States, Prof. Akinola Salau, said in Akure on Monday that the device would assist INEC attain its desire of free and credible elections.
Prof. Salau noted that although INEC was prepared for the elections, the postponement would help in perfecting all arrangements for the elections.
He said, “Card readers will add value to our electoral system. It will assist in attaining our desire to have free, fair and credible elections.”
According to him, the card readers had been tested and had been found to be reliable.
The commissioner who was on a tour of the states to evaluate the state of materials and preparedness for the coming election, said although INEC was not 100 per cent ready, it preparedness was enough to hold the elections.
He added that the security challenges led to the postponement, noting that the shift was not in any way designed to support any political party.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Olusegun Agbaje, said PVC collection in the state had reached 70.70 per cent.
