Buhari calls for calm over Elections Postponement

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians, particularly supporters of the APC to remain calm, but resolute in the face of the postponement of the 2015 general elections.

Buhari stated this while briefing journalists during a press conference at the party’s campaign office in Abuja.

The statement reads:

Following the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the 2015 general elections by six weeks, I wish to appeal for utmost restraint and calm by all Nigerians, especially the teeming supporters of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This postponement, which comes on the heels of  the bogey of the National Security Adviser that half of the registered voters were being disenfranchised was exposed as a crude and fraudulent attempt to subvert the electoral process. The PDP administration has now engineered a postponement using the threat that security will not be guaranteed across the length and breadth  of Nigeria because of military engagement in some states in the North East.  It  is important to note that although INEC acted within its constitutional powers, it is clear that it has been boxed into a situation where it has had to bow to pressure. Thus, the independence of INEC has been gravely compromised.

As a Nigerian and a presidential candidate in the elections, I share in the disappointment and frustration of this decision. This postponement coming a week to the first election has raised so many questions, many of which shall be asked in the days ahead. However, we must not allow ourselves to be tempted into taking actions that could further endanger the democratic process.

Our country is going through a difficult time in the hands of terrorists. Any act of violence can only complicate the security challenges in the country and provide further justification to those who would want to exploit every situation to frustrate the democratic process in the face of certain defeat at the polls.

If anything, this postponement should strengthen our resolve and commitment to rescue our country from the current economic and social collapse from this desperate band. Our desire for change must surpass their desperation to hold on to power at all cost.  We are clearly dealing with people who feel they can get away with placing their personal interest over those of our nation and its citizens. What is at stake is the very survival of our country. We must not allow this temporary delay to abort this great opportunity.   While I share the pains and frustrations of my fellow citizens over this development, my deep faith in the democratic process assures me that this country, with your support, will overcome.

We must remain resolute and rise above all provocations. We must continue to trust in the entire democratic process and in INEC, which has been brought under so much pressure in the last few days. Our trust can only serve to encourage the electoral body to remain steadfast and remain committed to the rule of law.  I wish to state strongly that our  party will not tolerate any further interference with the electoral process. The rescheduled elections of March 28th and April 11th, 2015 must be sacrosanct.

Nigeria is definitely greater than any of us, and much more important than our individual ambitions. Before us there was Nigeria, and long after we are gone there will still be Nigeria. Let  us continue to do our part to make it thegreat  country that it should be. We must rescue our dear country. God  being on our side, we shall salvage Nigeria together.

God Bless Nigeria!

Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR
Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Party, APC.

  2. Jega should be ashamed of himself for letting this happen. I have lost a great deal of respect for him. This is all PDP's plan, because they know that Jonathan was heading for defeat. The reasons given for the postponement are nothing but nonsense.

    1. let common sense prevail here, about 50% of the PVC have not been distributed in the southern part of the country were as the North east and North west have received their 100% PVC and u want elections to hold? Jega has been compromised other wise why did he attempted to create more polling units in the north than in the south were as millions of voters did multiple registration in the north and were de registered and have lesser number of vote? Inec said the pvc will chip based but the card being issued now is not in any way chip based, just an identity card with bar code. Inec said they've distributed 47million pvc leaving behind 20million and that they will distribute the rest before Feb 14th, do u think that over 50% registered voters will be able to collect their pvc before 14th Feb? Jega has failed, he had 4yrs to prepare for this election and we are still talking about pvc distribution. What is election without the electorate? How can u disenfranchise a whooping sum of 20million and expect people to keep quiet and not call for extension of date? Why is it only in Abuja that the are being printed? Why can't the printing be decentralised? Why have u shared more cards in the north, a strong hold of the APC than in the south a strong hold of PDP? There are so many questions Jega needs to answer.

    2. PVC is not the excuse. If you listen to the press conference, it is because the security agencies said they can't secure Inec. And they want to tackle BH in six weeks. After 3 state of emergencies those areas could not be secured. How will they secure those areas in six weeks.

  5. Anyone that blames Jega is a complete illiterate and lacks respect for human lives and labor laws. Jega remains the best option in this black and darkly corrupt country. Rather the blame hangs on the president who had 8 years to tackle insurgency or influence decisions that will wipe them out but rather wants to achieve all this in 6 weeks. Buhari will win and we shall see at the poll. No response to that man talking about forged certificate. In this age and time - shame on you!

  11. So from the above press statement, it is obvious that Buhari is not after free, fair, credible and violent-free election.! How would you say that election shifted to within the time allowed constitutionally , due to the prevailing circumstances, is an attempt by PDP to scuttle the process. It therefore a clear indication that you are selfish and after your interest without giving a damn if others Nigeria n's are self. Let it dawn on you that any day election is held, you would be roundly defeated by GEJ. you thwarted the democratic process before and you are now talking of democracy. What a Irony?

  12. All of u GEJ supporters, no hope for u, MUMU. Your brains have stopped working, the GEJ administration has so manipulated your ability to think properly.. People like u can't debate on issues that require high IQ obviously cos the issues you keep raising about buhari are inconsequential, meaningless and baseless and that's because u don't have time to carry out enough research before drawing your conclusions. You all need a renewal of the mind.

  15. I know that GEJ administration is full of corruption and we need a change but the changes should be done in a legal way to protect our constitution. According to the constitution, any candidate shouldn't lie on oath and his CONPLETE AND CORRECT academic qualification (AT LEAST O LEVEL CERTIFICATE) MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE INEC. The constitution cannot just be amended immediately because of the opposition. This is not the fault of Nigerian Government or PDP. If the opposition can verify his certificate from the main source (Cambridge) which we know cannot lie because of their integrity and we are assured that the certificate he presented is the original and not manipulated, he will be qualified to contest. Anyone who goes against this is against the peace of the country.

  18. It's quite obvious that election dates are postponed to favour Jonathan and his party. Come to think of it, the north eastern states are controlled by the APC (opposition party). How will the government postpone elections to favour its opponents. Never, it has never happened. Jonathan and his government never got what they received from people. The turn out for the opposition is huge and the ruling party became sad and disappointed. They know, they may not live well to enjoy their loots should APC win. Hence, they decided to shift the dates so that they can plan to rig the elections in favour of Jonathan and his party. Now, Nigerians should mark my words: There is going to be a serious problem which can lead to war at this time should Jonathan win the elections. We all know he has lost the elections and should he win, obviously it's rigging. Whether we have the facts or not, it is rigging. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria had elections while they were fighting war. Nigeria is not fighting a war. And only 14 out 774 local governments are being affected by this insurgency. Yet they cancelled elections. We all know they only need more time to perfect their riggings in favour of Jonathan. Each time I remember Prof. Humprey Nwosu, I pity Prof. Jega. Already, he's being messed up. Look at what happened in Ekiti under his watch as INEC chairman. I would advise him to resign because he cannot handle the problems that will occur after these elections. Each time I thank God that I left Nigeria for these bad and inhumane people. I weep that my people and other Nigerians are still suffering. For me, I miss Nigeria so much because I love my people. But things like this make me cry and get scared of fellow Nigerians. Why are we people so wicked? I expected this postponement and even worse. Can't you see Jonathan going about meeting Ibrahim Babangida who destroyed Nigeria and killed innocent people because he never wanted to leave presidency? What do you expect of Jonathan? Awon Ole, Oloriburuku eyan. They don't review history. This time will be different, by the special grace of God.
