Fresh reports reaching NigerianEye reveals that the presidential and National Assembly elections originally scheduled for 14 February may have been rescheduled to March 28 while the governorship and state houses of assembly elections earlier fixed for 28 February may now hold on 11 April, all of these subject to final ratification of the meeting between INEC National Commissioners and State Resident Electoral Commissioners currently ongoing.
The decision to reschedule the elections may have come out of the meeting of the electoral commission, political parties and civil society organisations.
Sixteen political parties favoured the rescheduling of the elections while nine were against.
UPDATED:
The meeting between the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, and the nation’s resident electoral commissioners has ended in a deadlock.
The deadlock followed the rejection of the proposal to shift the elections by 21 RECs who insisted that election must go on as planned.
However, the RECs have agreed to support the poll shift on two conditions. Firstly that Mr. Jega must extract commitment from the Presidency and security agencies that further extension would not be required after six weeks.
“RECs need a guarantee that there will not be further postponement after the six weeks they (the military) are demanding,” our source said.
He also said the second condition was that the commission should be allowed to decide how long the postponement should last.
“The feeling is that outside forces, especially the security agencies, should not be the ones to decide how long to shift the elections. That should be solely decided by INEC,” he said.
To this end, it was agreed that Mr. Jega should consult with the presidency and security agencies, after which another meeting will hold this night,
“The Chairman will then brief the RECs on the outcome of his consultations,” our said.
INEC has all day been holding consultative meetings with political parties, civil society organisations and the RECs with a view to taking decision on whether to postpone the general elections scheduled for February 14 and 28 or not.

DeletePDPigs has lost this election with their lies. Yahoo yahoo party.
ReplyDeleteInsecurity has been in Nigeria for a very long time and GEJ could not deal with the problem. What difference can six weeks bring?
ReplyDeletePostponement is corruption.
Pause a minute friends, jega is not a soldier and cannot take decision alone, let's spare the poor old man,. Any body in his shoes would have carried out voting method to carry every honorable member along. Even in the Parliament. All I say is if there is genuine reason to postpone the elections and jega finds those reasons credible, then so be it. If APC has done their home work well or even PDP, then who will win shall surely win.
ReplyDeleteYou just hit the nail on the head! Not all the ranting that i've been reading all day. I wonder why APC and all its cohorts doesn't seem to want to see reasons in anything. They're jst full of hate. Beats me.

ReplyDeleteAll i can say is that God shlould see nigeria true and give us a good leader
ReplyDeleteIf the Northwest has collected 12m voters cards and all the other 5 Geopolital zones have only collected 6m each, it is obvious that the elections need to be postponed to give other geo political zones a chance. Its a no brainer!!
