Bayelsa community threatens to shutdown oil exploration

Tension heightened yesterday in the coastal enclave of Bayelsa following the threat by the Nembe communities to shut down the oil exploration activities in their domain. The area alone produce about 200,000 barrel of crude oil per day.
The communities are angry over their alleged exclusion from the proposed sales of the oil wells, trunk lines and platforms owned by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).
It was gathered that the decision to move against the oil exploration activities within the Nembe Kingdom was informed by the refusal of the SPDC and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to heed to an earlier call for proper consideration of 20 per cent equity share from the funds that accrued from the sale of the SPDC assets in the area. Shut it down. It is your personal problem. With all the money yet your region is not developed. I pray the oil dries up. Lazy people
ReplyDeleteLet them shut it down! Shell did not sell any oil blocks - the company only sold its 30% interest. The oil blocks have always been constitutionally a property of the Nigerian government and oil companies are only licensed to operate - not own - the oil blocks. What the communities are demanding is like saying, if I have shares in Notore that makes fertilizers and Onne and I sell my shares, then I should pay part of the proceeds to the Onne community where Notore is based. How ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteIt is high time oil-producing communities realised that if they stop oil production, they would be the worse for it. Other parts of the country rely on the oil for only a part of their income. Oil-producing communities have stopped thinking and only rely on oil money.
