Yero, El-Rufai disagree over inciting comment

The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, on Sunday condemned recent provocative statement and threat to life credited to the state Governor, Mukhtar Yero.

El-Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, through his Special Assistance on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, said he was shocked at the governor’s pronouncement, urging his supporters to physically challenge and confront supporters of the main opposition party in the state.

But the governor in a Hausa phone-in programme of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, monitored in Kaduna, denied ever calling on his supporters to engage in violent confrontation that might lead to the breakdown of law and order in the state.

The governor, however, said he only asked his supporters to defend themselves in the face of threat to their lives and property.

Yero had decried the situation whereby the PDP supporters were always threatened and intimidated.

The governor had said, “Our party members were intimidated, those who openly supported us were threatened, that they were coming to burn their houses, leadership should not be so. We strongly oppose intimidation and politics of violence.”

However, El-Rufai argued that the governor had at the formal launch of his campaign asked his supporters to physically challenge and confront the APC supporters.

The former minister said,”He plainly encouraged his supporters to be violent, vowing that “anyone born of a woman who dares us we will use all the powers and force at our disposal to crush him.

“Yero followed up this incitement to violence and anarchy by making wild allegations about Malam Nasir el-Rufai and threatened Malam El-Rufai.”

He wondered why a supposedly democratically elected governor could be talking as if “he can freely abuse or abridge the right of any citizen and go scot-free.”
