Lagos State's People's Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate Jimi Agbaje took his campaign to London United Kingdom over the weekend as part of a plan to reach out to the UK diaspora who he said are vital to the development of the state.
At a packed meeting in London called by Mr Agbaje's supporters and the UK chapter of the PDP, the governorship candidate warned of the dangers of not being sensitive when voting. While outlining his plans for Lagos State if elected governor, Mr Agbaje said it was also important to be mindful of what happened at the centre.
Outlining his plans for Lagos State, Mr Agbaje said he planned to build 150,000 housing units over the next four years if elected. He added that between 1999 and now, only 25,000 units have been built, which is way short of the annual demand of at least 120,000, so he planned to start off increasing this in the hope that the numbers would multiply with time.
Among the other plans Mr Agbaje outlined are proposals to develop the rural parts of the state, introduce a health programme similar to the British National Health Service and invest more in education. He added that at the moment, 82% of the education budget was spent on recurrent expenditure and of the 18% that was capital, 10% of this went to the secretariat.
Pointing out that if elected, he would seek to tap into the potential of the diaspora, Mr Agbaje said he would seek to bring as many Nigerians in the UK back home as possible so Lagos State can benefit from their expertise. He also added that he was in favour of allowing disaporans to vote once the necessary structures were put in place.
Mr Agbaje added: "I think we have to recognise the diaspora as a constituency that has a role to play as they bring along experience and ideas. They are coming from a more developed society so have a lot to offer. "We have to see how many of them we can bring back home and see how they can add value to the process. I support diaspora voting too but there are still issues to be resolved before it can happen so it is about getting the timing right."

Furthermore, Mr Agbaje warned that Niger Delta militants could shut the country's economy down if President Goodluck Jonathan was not returned to power next month. In February,
Mr Agbaje will be running for Lagos State governor in the same elections during which President Jonathan will be up against General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the governorship candidate warned of the consequences of not returning President Goodluck to office.
Mr Agbaje said: "The Buhari of today is not the Buhari of 2007 or 2011 as he is operating on the steam of those who put him there for their own selfish purposes.
We also have to appreciate the fact that the people in the south-south have the ability to shut the system down of their man is not elected.
"Remember that they have done it before. yes, it can happen in the north too but we have to ask ourselves which of the two scenarios we can survive best." Among the guests who attended the event were Dr Bamanga Tukur, the former PDP chairman and local community leaders in the UK. These included the chairman of the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK, Chief Bimbo Afolayan, Dr Alistair Soyode, the chairman of Ben TV, the former mayor of Enfield Kate Anolue and Anna Mbachu, the former mayor of Waltham Forest. -

This is nonsensical statement. How can this man think that Nigerians will be forced to vote Jonathan because of trait of militant actions. We can not be coerced to vote a non performing president for fear of Asari and co. Nigeria is bigger than terrorists and militants or terrorists will be history if we can have a determined leader. We should not glorify failures if really we want to be like UK .
ReplyDeleteJimi want to ridicule himself. Economy that is shut down already. If Jimi mix his campaign with GEJ, he will fail woefully.
ReplyDeleteListen to a man that want to be the Governor of not just any state but Lagos state , he is telling us to vote for Jonathan not because he is the right man for the job but because the naija delta militants will short the country's economy down which means if I threatened the pease of Lagos state when he becomes the governor he will make his vice not because am OK for the job but because he is afraid of me (1) He went to the UK to campaign for the people whom yet do not have the necessary structure to vote for their beloved country and his posters is at so many palaces in London and even the buses and some taxis have his campaign pictures branded all over them , please tell me the sense in it , I can not start to say the nonsense he voiced out as the things he have mapped out to do if elected in to office , this is the same way Jonathan campaign to us with the slogan A breath of fresh air all for us now to be breathing from the Danfo's exhaust pipe and he is now campaigning that if we vote him the second time he will expose all the former corrupt officials as if he is no longer in power.
ReplyDeletethis is the third time Jimmy Abgaje is vying to be Lagos state governor which is very good but my problem with him is that he should be more wise in politics but he is not and think that we too are not , I don't belong to the APC am just a watcher but these PDP guys are annoying me this days I expect them to be tactical but they are not claiming to be PHD holders but people like who refused to collect our WASC result can see through their ignorant ideologies , am still watching. INTIMIDATION would not work, PDP no hidin place 4 u 2015
ReplyDeleteI do not know why. I love this man Jimi Agbaje but his decision to jump into the ship of PDP is very unfortunate. he would have done better if he had joined Labour Party or something but PDP? Fa Fa Foul. The day he joined PDP, he has gotten his reputation tainted and that explain his reasoning. And please Mr Jimi, if you want people to still have some respect(which of course cannot guaranty your victory) for you, it is better you forget GEJ. A word is enough for the wise.
ReplyDeleteFor this statement you have lost one vote both in Lagos and Federal. Rubbish statement!
ReplyDeleteJimmy is the man of the moment with so much up his sleeves. We must make the new Lagos a reality with Jimmy on the saddle. We must rescue Lagos from the wicked jaws of Tinubu. Say Yes to Jimmy and No to same of the same. We love you Jimmy Agbaje. PTN.
ReplyDeleteHe has gone to UK to create avenue of looting Lagos state fund if elected, but he has already failed woefully. A man with such ideology can not rule a state like zamfara not to talk of Lagos state.
ReplyDeleteim sorry for jimi
ReplyDeleteJimi or what do they call you,you have failed in lagos i can't say in london o.
ReplyDeleteImagine ds kinda of statement frm a gubernatorial aspirant!!
ReplyDeletemost of us here open our mouth to talk nonsense without releasing what we are saying with our mouth. who is the right person, is it the Buhari? the question we Nigerians must ask ourselves this questions: What made Buhari fighting to be our president ever since 2003 up till date? is he fighting for a just course or is he fighting for his own personal interest. as a matter of fact, an average Nigerian who is current in the history of Nigeria should recall our how our economy starting falling up till date, our economy started from 1983 to 1985 which is during the military region of General Buhari up till IBB administration before Nigerian is rated high in the world record of crime and 419. I am not in a support of anybody but we should talk wise and vote wisely..
