A former military Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, has said Nigerians must rise up in unison to tell our politicians that our country is bigger than their personal ego and ambitions.
He also said unless checkmated, the inordinate ambition as well as desperation of some of our politicians are capable of terminally checkmating our nation.
Abubakar said this in an open letter entitled ‘Letter to Nigerians’ on Wednesday.
He explained that Nigeria was once again at a crossroads and was unsure of which way to go.
The former military ruler noted that the nation was being threatened by an intractable insurgency, unprecedented carnage, a rise in the menace of riots, communal violence, cattle rustling and sundry criminality in several states.
According to him, to make matters worse, our political class daily display immaturity in their conduct and utterances to further heat up the polity.
He said it was time we tell one another uncomfortable home truths.
The retired general pointed out that it was the duty of leaders at all levels to tell truth to power in order to help correctly identify and diagnose the causes of disaffection and anger in the land, and do something about them.
He noted that there was palpable desperation everywhere in the land, explaining that we were in a situation in which everyone was dissatisfied with what was going on, but nobody was sure of what to do, or what was going to happen next.
Abubakar expressed sadness that the nation had suffered greatly with the loss of several lives with more than a million people displaced within the country, and tens of thousands forced across our borders into neighbouring countries.
He said, “In one of the most senseless attacks, more than 2,000 people were said to have been killed in a single attack on Baga town of Borno State last week. This is clearly unacceptable.
“We feel the time has come to restore people’s confidence in the ability of government to confront, repel and put a stop to the impunity of the insurgency; and reassure them of its capacity and readiness to protect them at all times.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

Evil strive where "good" people decide to say and do nothing. Having tried Mr A,B,C and they could all not perform, it becomes plausible to try D, E and perhaps F. Italy president has stepped aside for reasons!

ReplyDeleteI hope we all listen to the voice of a real elder statesman! Short, concise and straight to the point!
ReplyDeleteWell said General. May be it is time to give good advise. For years some people from some parts of the country thought the insurgency will favour them and discomfit the Government. This has given fodder to the insurgents and provided misguided recruits into thier thousands. We should regard this as a national Calamity and come together and fight it.
ReplyDeleteThe example of France should teach us that only unity can overcome such senseless carnage we are currently witnessing.
Genaral you are just talking now .u tot the insurgece will favor you .what you people started will consume you all ,if you hard spoken long tome without abandoning it to. Jonathan ,may be we would have been ouy since
ReplyDeleteNo nody chased gowon away during the civil war ,they rallied round him until it was over.be wise .insurgence will statr from the SS soon and oul supply cut.then we shakl what to do
ReplyDeletepeople stayed with Gowon becos he fought back. Our current president just promises and does nothing. Giving excuses. When US and UK refused to sell arms to Gowon during the civil war, he threatened and even started the process of buying from Russia, the west complied immediately. If GEJ is serious about winning this war he should have threatened or gone ahead to buy arms from china. You will see America landing soldiers immediately. Jona just siddon dey booze for Villa he no do anything
DeleteHow do we tell these politicians the " truth" and how do we " restore people’s confidence in the ability of government to confront, repel and put a stop to the impunity of the insurgency; and reassure them of its capacity and readiness to protect them at all times.”?.General, please offer your opinions or suggestions
ReplyDeleteThe General had succeded in saying nothing.
ReplyDeleteWell said General Abu, that is why we need to try other hands. Enough of politicking with peoples' lives.
ReplyDeletesiton look na dog name! why are people condemning the insurgency just now? why did they not start condemning them right from the onset? France is a really superb example of how Islamic terrorist should be treated, they all united with one voice and I didn't see placards like "Holande must go" but in Nigeria we politicized everything with our dirty and murderous minds!
ReplyDeleteGod bless nigeria
