Police disrupts APC rally in Akure with teargas

The Walk for Change rally of the All Progressives Congress, which held in Akure, Ondo State capital on Friday, was disrupted momentarily with the use of teargas by men of the Ondo State Police Command.

The Vice Presidential candidate of the party, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was scheduled to lead the procession from the Leo Junction to the Alagbaka area of Akure.

While supporters of the party converged at the venue in the morning as they awaited the arrival of Osinbajo, policemen swooped in, firing teargas in a bid to disperse the crowd.

Most of the supporters, observers and journalists scampered for safety to escape the hurting effects of the gas.

Normalcy returned after leaders of the party in the state protested the police invasion and met with the hierarchy of the police in the state.

Convener of the rally, who is also the Coordinator of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr. Bola Ilori, said the people had the right to engage in the campaign rally, wondering why the police carried out the act.

He said that the people demonstrated courage in standing up against the oppression, and that the rally held because the people were determined to effect the needed change.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incident, told our correspondent that he had not been fully briefed on the incident.

  1. Why is it that the police and sss is always attacking APC in all area, the police and the sss should openly declear their support for PDP the way MEND declear support for Buhari. This was a peaceful rally but the police was sent to be tear-gassing people.PDP and Jonathan should call party agents to order the SSS and the POLICE .
