The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has warned Governor Babatunde Fashola against shutting the Lagos State University during the election period.
In a statement by the state PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Gani Taofik, the party said the purported plan to shut the university would disenfranchise many students who had registered within the institution.
The PDP alleged that Fashola was planning to shut down the school because the governor knew that the students would vote massively for the PDP to protest “the harsh policies of the APC-led government in the state.”
The statement read in part, “Governor Fashola is planning to shut down LASU on January 31 so that students may not be around in the community where they had registered as voters.
“The intention is to frustrate the students who have resolved to cast votes against the APC in the state. We are concerned that this is a plot to disenfranchise the students. We hereby call on the support of the students to resist the closure.”
The party also alleged that the APC-led government had commercialised the education sector. It called on Lagosians to vote out the APC in the elections.
It said, “Education is no more affordable in Lagos State. The state now has the highest number of private schools because of failed public schools. The governor, obviously, is confused on positioning our education sector. In Akwa Ibom state, education is free and compulsory. Even the students get free lunch and cash allowances to motivate them.
“In Lagos State, the sector is only managed on paper. With all the huge allocations for almost 16 years, the sector is still battling with a lot of setbacks. Parents have withdrawn their wards from many public schools. The schools have become mere community fields. The few befitting public schools are the ones renovated by non-government organisations, corporate bodies and philanthropists. They put very low premium on education.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
