Over 20 feared dead as robbers cause havoc in Ondo State

Following the attack by armed robbers on banks in Ikare Akoko, in Ondo State, on Tuesday, banks and other critical commercial centres were closed on Wednesday for fear of further attacks.

It was gathered that many parents refused to send their children to school, resulting in scanty academic activities.

There were however fears that the number of deaths could be far beyond 20, as Police were still working to put together the actual number of those killed in the raid.

But residents said 20 bodies were recovered, while several others were injured.

The Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, and the Commissioner of Police in the state, Isaac Eke, visited the scene of the robbery on Wednesday to assess the situation.

Eke told journalists at the scene that his men had begun investigations and promised to fish out the robbers and make them face the full wrath of the law.

The town’s traditional ruler, Oba Akadiri Momoh, condemned the incident and urged the Police to investigate the raid by ensuring that the perpetrators of the dastardly act were brought to book.

A visit to Jubilee Road, where the affected banks are located, showed that the banks did not open to customers, just as commercial activities were generally at a low ebb as a result of Tuesday’s attacks.

The affected banks include the First Bank Plc, Skye Bank and Eco Bank, situated along Jubillee Road in the commercial center of Ikare Akoko.

A shop owner in the area told journalists that the armed robbers came in about four vehicles and mounted blockades in all routes leading to the area, while shooting sporadically.

He said four policemen were sprayed with bullets, and those waiting at the ATM to withdraw money were also caught in the fire.
