The Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has said that the state tertiary institutions charged one of the cheapest tuition regimes in the country.
He said his administration had restructured education in the state towards placing it on a sustainable platform within the limits of available resources.
According to a statement on Friday by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the governor gave the hint at the inauguration of the newly built Senate Building at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, on Friday.
Mimiko said the provision of quality education for the citizenry was a matter of great concern to his administration.
He said, “We have done everything possible to rekindle the hope of the younger generation of a government that is committed to service delivery, and that, perhaps, is responsible for the fact that the regime of fees in all our state-owned tertiary institutions is no doubt one of the cheapest in Nigeria.
“We have deliberately democratised access to education based on our conviction that if education is meant for just a few, the consequences of not enabling a part of the society to be enlightened would be disastrous for all and sundry.”
Mimiko, who received the education icon award of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Zone D, South-West Nigeria, noted that the huge investment of his administration in tertiary education had continued to yield results and attract recognition from within and outside the country.
He said that the United States Transparency International Standards recently declared the university as the best state-owned university in Nigeria and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, as the best state-owned polytechnic in the country.
Meanwhile, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Femi Mimiko, described the building as one of the best Senate buildings globally, with its seven staircases, three elevators, 148 offices, 165 conveniences, 10 boardrooms, two conference halls, a banquet hall, and a two-room living apartment.
