The Nigeria Immigration Service on Wednesday warned foreigners in the country not to take any part in the forthcoming general elections.
At a meeting between the Economic Community of West African States leaders and the Comptroller of Immigration Service, Oyo State Command, Innocent Akatu, the foreigners were reminded that they had no constitutional rights to get the voter cards or apply for the National Identity Card. They were also warned that anyone caught without valid travelling document would be arrested and prosecuted.
The meeting was attended by leaders of the ECOWAS communities in Oyo State, some foreign nationals, senior NIS officers, community leaders and government representatives.
Speaking with our correspondent after the meeting, Akatu said he had visited 22 council areas in the state to sensitise the foreigners on the limit of their rights during the elections.
He said, “We are here to sensitise the ECOWAS nationals who are living in Nigeria. We have reminded them that they are foreigners, with the warning that they should steer clear of the election process. They cannot vote and they should not allow politicians to use them to foment trouble or cause violence. We have told them that even if they have lived here for a long time, as long as they are not recognised by our law as Nigerians, they cannot vote.”
“We used the community leaders to bring in the ECOWAS leaders from their communities. I have met with them separately and visited 22 councils out of the 33 councils in the state. I met the foreigners in those areas and put emphasis on the fact that they have no right to vote. They must not attempt to get the voter cards or the national identity cards.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
