The Niger State Police Command has outlawed the use of Street Urchins popularly known as “Yandaba” in Hausa language from being used by political parties and candidates in the state for campaigns ahead of next month’s general elections in the country.
The “Yandabas” are notorious for the deployment of dangerous weapons in street fighting especially at the state capital, Minna.
The police boss said they were banned to forestall outbreak of violence among supporters of the contestants before, during and after elections.
“All rallies must be held at a specified venue so that the police can provide adequate security before and after such gatherings. We will not tolerate a situation whereby party supporters will clash in the streets to trigger violence,” Amore declared.
He said political parties must obtain permits for rallies at identified venues for adequate protection by security agents, saying that the police will occupy rally venues without any permit.
The ComPol assured of police impartiality in the conduct of the elections but asked politicians to play politics according to the rules of the game to ensure peaceful elections.
Amore added that “The law prohibits the use of inflammatory language and provocative actions or manifestation that can incite violence against another party or candidate.
“Similarly, political parties and their candidates should say no to thuggery and we should have in our mind that the law equally prohibits use of private security organisation, vanguard or any other group for the purpose of providing security during campaigns, rallies, processions or elections”.
