Lagos warns residents as fire guts three more houses

The Lagos State Government has warned the people of the state to be wary of activities that could cause fire outbreak.

The warning came on Sunday as fire gutted three more houses in the state.

There had been series of fire outbreaks in the state in the previous week, which had killed no fewer than six persons, destroyed property estimated at billions of naira, and rendered many homeless.

The PUNCH learnt on Sunday that two houses went up in flames at Dankaro Estate and Islamic Street in the Ojodu Berger area of the state, while a bungalow was also ravaged by fire on Jimoh Balogun Street, CMD Road, Shangisha.

However, the causes of the fire had yet to be identified.

At the Dankaro Estate, a bungalow was said to have been gutted by fire, which had however been put off before the arrival of firemen from the Lagos State Fire Service.

It was also learnt that the Islamic Street fire involved a two storey building, which destroyed a three bedroom apartment stored with empty cartons.

The Shangisha fire was said to have destroyed two shops in the bungalow and was put off by the quick intervention of the firefighters.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, who confirmed the development, warned people of the state against smoking and burning of refuse.

He said, “On Saturday, 12 rooms were equally destroyed by fire at Alhaji Nurudeen Street, Ojo Oba Barracks, Ojo, and the toll keeps increasing.

“The harmattan season is still here and the temperature is still warm. People should be mindful of their neighbours who smoke and watch how they pack and dispose their refuse. Residents must avoid bush or refuse burning at this critical time.”
