Lagos candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje has promised to address the rising accommodation problem in the state with special emphasis on building low cost housing for Lagosians.
Speaking at a town hall meeting at Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area, Agbaje, who accused the state government of paying lip service to the plight of the masses in the state in the area of housing, noted that the All Progressives Congress, APC-led government has only succeeded in building 25,000 housing units in the last 16 years.
Agbaje argued that some major challenges militating against affordable housing in the state is the exorbitant cost of land and the stress of obtaining permit from the state government.
He said: “I disagree with the excuses by the Lagos State Government that it is not easy to build for low income earners in the state. A former governor Lateef Jakande did it and I will do it if elected.”
“The excuse the government has given is that the cost of cement is high and had used tax payers money to build for themselves, their cronies and the rich. Lagos State is ranked 36th in World Bank ratings of places where it is very difficult to get approval to build”, Agbaje argued.
He, however, promised that if elected, his administration would reduce the cost of Land in Lagos.
He said: “We understand how building low cost houses can be done in Lagos. The first thing we will do is to reduce the cost of Land because our records show that the elite have taken all the land for themselves.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
