Jonathan's doctorate degree meaningless — Fashola

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has said President Goodluck Jonathan’s doctorate degree and Vice President Namadi Sambo’s degree in architecture have not reflected positively in their style of governance.

The governor said this as the Ikorodu rally of the All Progressives Congress on Saturday.

He said the standard of living and security of Nigerians had worsened since Jonathan took over power despite being the first doctorate degree holder to become President of Nigeria.

Fashola said, “When the President, a PhD holder, assumed office, rather than improve the standard of living of the citizens, we were having regression. His vice is an architect but he cannot construct roads.

“But it is saddening that a lawyer is the Commissioner for Works in Edo State and he has constructed several roads. In Ogun State, the Commissioner for Works is an architect and he has built several roads.

“Let us ask Vice President Sambo what has he done for the nation. All he (Sambo) could do was to inform the President that people are leaving Lagos because of the state tax regime. And I want everyone to ask the vice president if the number of vehicles coming into Lagos has reduced.”

Fashola also accused the Lagos PDP governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, of telling lies about his government.

The governor warned the people of the state not to believe Agbaje’s statements.

Agbaje had accused the APC- led state government of underfunding the education sector during a governorship debate on Thursday.

Reacting to the allegation, however, Fashola said, “I have maintained that you should not vote for someone with inexperience. The PDP governorship candidate in Lagos is a pharmacist that does not know anything about the running of government. Anytime he speaks, he shows his ignorance.

“He says that this government spends only three percent of the state budget on education. I’m surprised at his ignorance because in my last budget presentation, the budget for education was increased from 15 percent to 16 percent. He should get his facts right.

“This is why whenever he says something contrary to the facts on ground, I will respond. He has consistently shown that he is inexperienced and Lagos cannot be left in the hands of inexperienced people.”

Fashola said the PDP-led Federal Government had ruined the nation’s economy and would also destroy the economy of the state if it took over.

He said the governorship candidate of the APC, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, was a better candidate as he was responsible for restructuring the state’s finances when former President Olusegun Obasanjo withheld billions of naira belonging to the state for several months.

He said, “When I became governor of Lagos State in 2007, the exchange rate was N120 to one dollar, but now the exchange rate is N195 to one dollar. We used to borrow money from banks at the interest rate of 10 per cent, now the interest rate has risen to 24 per cent.

“Not only that, the government has increased import duties of cars to 70 per cent. It is only waiting for the elections to be over to begin implementation. Is that how the PDP government plans to improve the economy?

“The PDP prevented us from having more local governments that were meant to bring development closer to the grassroots. They tried to frustrate us, and when they seized the money belonging local governments in Lagos, it was Akinwumi Ambode that made sure that Lagos state did not suffer.

“He was the one in charge of the finances because he was the accountant general and he made sure everything worked smoothly. I and Osinbajo were in the legal team that were fighting for the creation of more local governments.”

  2. Fashola have lost it again. He has gone completely mad and needs psychiatrist immediate. You wish Nigeria uneducated man yet you chose an educated man for Lagos. You are probably more Lagosians than Nigerian. God will surprise you in the coming days.

    1. Is a Major General in the Nigerian Army uneducated? Is being a soldier not a career?

I wonder who is really educated in Nigeria.

  5. First, let me say that I have a doctorate degree. But I recall a British Senior Lecturer of mine in my undergraduate classes used to say "a PhD is someone who knows everything about nothing". I didn't quite understand him then, but by the time I finished my PhD, I understood him. Nigerians make too much of a PhD and expect far too much from someone just because he has a PhD. Compare Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) with General Olusegun Obasanjo (Rtd). Gowon has a PhD from Warwick University. He led Nigeria through the civil war, ruling for 8 years. If there is someone today who should be able to document virtually everything that led to the war, and that happened during the war, it should be Yakubu Gowon. But alas! With his PhD, he has not given Nigeria any account of the war. Now look at Obasanjo. Even when he had no university degree, he gave Nigerians his account of the civil war. You can argue with statements he made and insult him. But he has left a legacy for historians.

People expect far too much from Goodluck Jonathan just because he has a PhD in Zoology. He may know a whole lot about how a fish in the Bayelsan creeks opens its mouth to swallow its meal, but that has nothing to do with his ability to govern. It may surprise Nigerians that John Major - former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, does not have even one university degree! The highest formal qualification he has is a few O-Levels! He could not go higher because he had a serious struggle with mathematics. But he did reasonably well as British PM!

What GEJ lacks are the basic management principles that are not necessarily taught in the classroom or earned by taking a PhD. He lacks courage, he lacks integrity, and is unable to see beyond his tribe. From primary school through to his doctorate, he never lived outside his locality. Now you can see why he is so limited!

  6. GEJ WE WANT. Fashola please stop burning markets in Lagos just to force the Ibos to support APC: A PARTY of CRIMINALS. You are only an attack dog Tinubu uses against his enemies.

    1. Are Ibos the only people with markets in Lagos? Your thinking is so warped! I am not a politician, but if APC wins in Lagos, it will have nothing to do with burnt markets. You must have such a small mind to think that burning Ibo's markets would force Ibos to vote for APC. You will vote secretly and vote for whoever you want.

  7. Fashola is just a mere propagandist. Speaking from both sides of the mouth. He don't want old governor for lagos but he want an old president for nigeria. He need only experienced hands to run the govt yet he claims he never held any government post prio to being governor.

    1. Let everybody help tell Fashola that he should be careful in destroying Nigerian's certificates because of desperation to power. It also means that his degrees are meaningless. Fashola is insulting all Nigerian PHD holders and though I am not partisan I cannot take it. Unless he writes apology to us I and all the PHD holders I know will not vote for APC,period! By this act we are henceforth withdrawing all sympathies to APC.It is not the matter of Goodluck but OUR educational system. Why is it that APC wants to rule by first descrying the educational system? Do the even consider the implication of feeding a semi- illiterate as Presidential candidate on the youths.

  8. Why are Nigerians making too much noise about doctorate degree holders?

GEJ may have PhD but Nigeria has not benefited from it. Instead he could not manage the country.

  10. I can see why most commentators here always remain anonymous. The quality of their comments is, at best, appalling. Rather than comment on the report presented, they will open a new chapter and start personal attack. Whoever wins election at any level in the coming general election should please be more pragmatic about development of our nation's educational system.

  11. Mr Anonymous who said Fashola owes them an apology because he hold PhD...your post really shows your thinking is very far from PhD level. so because Fashola spoke about Jonathan and his PhD, that means he insulted all PhD holders in Nigeria. You can see you are on your own
.shameless human beign.withdraw your vote and feed it to d dogs..lets see who laughs last. Instead of giving thanks to God that bestowed the grace upon you to attain that level, you are busy scouting for governor's apology...you no get work. in fact you owe us an outright apology for dealing PhD holders this shameful blow.

  12. Fashola has spoiled Lagos state , see what is happening in Lagos is compared to what is happening in Borno state APC syndrome. Nigerians please vote APC out of Lagos state . Now insulting Doctorate Degree of the President , shame if the west did not honored degrees they would not have sent their children to school , Fashola appears as if he never went to school and I believe he has never practice or won any case as a Barrister of Law.
