Jonathan visits Sanusi in Kano, seeks royal blessings

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday visited the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, in his palace, in his bid to get the traditional ruler’s blessing for his re-election.

He was in the city in continuation of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential campaigns.

The relationship between the two became strained last year when the President suspended Sanusi as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Jonathan had suspended Sanusi as the apex bank’s boss over what was described as financial recklessness and thereafter directed the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria to further investigate him.

Shortly after his suspension, however, Sanusi became the Emir of Kano following the death of the former occupant of the stool, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

There were unconfirmed reports then that the Presidency moved to ensure that Sanusi did not emerge as the Emir.

During the Wednesday visit, Jonathan congratulated Sanusi on his installation and condoled with him and the people of the emirate on Bayero’s demise.

He told the traditional ruler that he was in his palace to formally introduce himself, Vice President Namadi Sambo and other PDP candidates in the election.

“I am here to seek your royal blessing and to reassure the people of Kano that PDP is totally committed to developing the country,” he told the monarch.

In his response, Sanusi thanked Jonathan for the visit and expressed the hope that his campaign in the state would be hitch-free.

He stressed the need for all office seekers to go about their campaigns without violence.

“Democracy is all about giving people the chance to make their choice and so, there is no need for violence,” he said.

Sanusi urged the people to accept the verdict after the election and rally around whoever emerges the winner.

He also advised the Federal Government to intensify efforts aimed at ensuring security in all parts of the country before, during and after the elections.

Sanusi prayed for the emergence of leaders that would move the country forward.

He also promised that he would make himself available to give advice to governments at any levels.

Meanwhile, Jonathan has promised that no country currently at par with Nigeria will be able to overtake it in terms of development

  1. Politics really breeds desperation. Is this the same person that he sacked as the CBN governor and seized his passport for reporting a $20b theft by the administration? Jonathan has no shame.

    1. What shame are you taking about? It is a courtesy call. As a traditional ruler, all office seekers coming to the domain ought to pay a visit. It does not mean he is asking Sanusi to vote for him.
The President's visit inspite of differences shows maturity.

  2. What does shame have to do with protocol. Whatever they may have had in the past, one is the president and the other a king and there are protocols that are complied with whenever the president visits a state and that includes visiting the paramount traditional ruler and seeking his blessings. So leave shame out of it and give kudos to them for behaving like mature men.

  4. I dreamt the President told the Emir that, " I am happy you worked with me and know the zeal and passion I have for this great country of ours, so I would like you to help educate people, properly and objectively about my person and capability to govern. Let them know I will want to continue the good works of this administration, which you as a person contributed your quota, most especially as it regards fighting corruption, which my government demonstrated by signing into law FOI bill,If re-elected, the first bill I will send to the national assembly will be the one that seeks to protect all public officers who would divulge unsolicited information about any fellow public servant. As you are aware, I ensured that anybody no matter how placed in my government was rapidly prosecuted and brought to justice if she or he involved in any act semblance of corruption or little stealing. This time around if elected, I will deploy modern technology to ginger the fight against corruption, the good thing is that, this is a home grown technology and is pioneered by one of the 6 universities this administration started, just to be precise, the one in Otuoke. My fairness in rewarding excellence in all forms especially in people that have brought accolades to this country cannot be doubted as was recently demonstrated when I ordered the release of your international passport. You will recall I promised revamping of electricity, jobs for the youths, security for the people of Kano State and local refining of our crude oil the first time I was campaigning. 4yrs down the drain, I am glad you are back home to testify yourself that, all the Gen sets in this Palace are no longer useful since you have power here 24/7. As a result, all those textiles industries that were moribund are all working and have taken off the streets about 1million youths and a good percentage of Almajiris that hitherto loomed without jobs, thus reducing the crime rate in the state. Everybody moves freely this time no matter the time without fear of been attacked. With your hands-on experience especially as a member of the economic team then, let the people know how we met a dwindling economy but “re-based” it to be the biggest in Africa, increased the purchasing power of Nigerians, increased the exchange rate, quadrupled our foreign reserves. And lastly let them recall that, all the refineries we met are now working at full capacity, we've gone ahead to build new ones as you know, the whole of Kano state is now served with refined products from our new refinery and managed solely by NNPC here in Sabon Geri churning out 3.3million Ltrs of PMS daily, so now instead of continued importation of refined products, developing other despite huge crude oil deposits that characterized the past governments.
We now export refined products to other west african states and our Central African neighbors, Chad and Niger, if re-elected we will double our efforts and eventually supply the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. All these were achieved by ingenuity, careful thinking, dedication and selfless service to nation. I don't think one that cannot remember his phone number would achieve these in just but 4yrs. Urge them to ignore the stories of rotation agreements and religion but vote based on Competence and Integrity of the candidates which I symbolize so as to make Nigeria of our dreams a reality in the next 4yrs''. God bless Nigeria.
