Governor Mimiko grants amnesty to 8 prisoners



ONDO State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has granted amnesty to eight prisoners serving different jail terms in the state in the spirit of the Yuletide.

According to a statement issued by the state Commissioner of Information, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, the Governor’s gesture is in line with the power conferred on him by section 212 (1) of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended.

One of the beneficiaries of the amnesty who was convicted over a capital offence got his jail term reduced to 15 years.



While the others who were convicted for stealing and burglary were pardoned.

They were all granted amnesty on the ground of good conduct.

According to the statement, the amnesty is exercise of the Governor’s power to grant prerogative of mercy to convicts as conferred by the Constitution of the country adding that the Governor is empowered to pardon, free, grant respite or substitute severe punishment with lesser one as a form of amnesty for convicts.

The amnesty takes immediate effect.

Meanwhile, the governor in his New Year message has called on Nigerians not to relent in their prayers of peace and unity for Nigeria as the country enters the election year.
