Four men in Spain’s North African territory of Ceuta were arrested Saturday morning on suspicion of being in a terrorist cell that had “a strong determination to attack,” Spain’s Interior Ministry said.
Spanish authorities arrested the men — who are two pairs of brothers suspected of preparing an attack, possibly one in which they’d blow themselves up — Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz told reporters Saturday.
Their suspected cell had “many similarities” with the terrorists behind the January 7 massacre at the Paris offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine, the minister said. Twelve people were killed in that attack.
Cueta is a Spanish exclave in northern Africa bordering Morocco, across the Strait of Gibraltar.
The suspects, who are Spanish citizens and are of Moroccan origin, are “strongly radicalized” and had psychological and physical training, as well as training in the use of weapons, said the minister while addressing reporters at an event of his ruling conservative party.
