It's just few days to the commencement of the 2015 elections and, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, has warned corps members who will be on election duty to be committed and guard against misconduct.
The DG said corps members were adults and would be held responsible for their actions during the elections.
Olawumi, who was on a visit to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, in Abuja on Wednesday, noted that the corps members opted to participate in the polls because of their love for the country.
The NYSC DG said, “The arrangement (of recruiting corps members) is different with the corps members registering online, and they did it voluntarily.
“The scheme will not be responsible for their conduct. This is also because none of them is less than 18 years. The corps members should be responsible for their conduct during the elections.”
But he said adequate security would be provided for the corps members.
He said that following the unfortunate 2011 post-election violence that led to the death of some corps members, the NYSC management set up Election Security Committee with representatives from the military and other security agencies to review NYSC participation in future elections.
Jega assured the NYSC boss that the electoral commission would provide adequate security for the corps members before, during and after the polls.
He commended the participation of corps members in elections, noting that their participation since 2011 had lifted the credibility of elections in the country.
Jega promised that the 2015 general elections would be better than previous elections with the collaboration of the NYSC.
He said that INEC would pay attention to the Memorandum of Understanding it signed with the NYSC, especially in guaranteeing the security of corps members on election duty. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
