Against the backdrop of the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the forthcoming 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament kicking off in Equatorial Guinea on January 17, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has promised to raise a national team that will make Nigerians proud again.
The NFF, Director of competitions, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi told journalists in Abuja that having realized where it got it wrong last year, the federation has started building a new national team which will have a strong presence of the home based players.
Sanusi also revealed that the president of the NFF Amaju Pinnick has started a genuine move to reconcile all the aggrieved stakeholders in Nigerian football even as he urged them to sheath their swords in the interest of the beautiful game.
“What we are doing now is the rebuilding process to build a formidable team that Nigerians can be proud of and the first practical step is the international friendly matches against Ivory Coast and Sudan coming up on the 12th and 17th of January.
“Also another way of looking forward is the effort of the Amaju Pinnick led executive committee which is making frantic efforts to reconcile the entire Nigerian football family after the crisis that rocked the game last year. I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all the stakeholders to give peace a chance and let the game move forward”.
The director of competitions further revealed that the technical crew of the NFF has been given the mandate to always ensure that henceforth, the nucleus of the national team will be made up of mainly players plying their trade in the Nigerian league.
However, he further argued that the past year was a good one for the nation’s football except for the failure of the Super Eagles to be in Equatorial Guinea to defend the African title which they won in South Africa in 2013.
