Boko Haram murders 11 in Cameroon, injures others

Members of the Boko Haram insurgent group attacked a minibus carrying 16 people, including eight women, who were travelling from Waza to Mora in Cameroon on Thursday night.

According to a Cameroonian online newspaper, www.camer.be, the passengers were leaving Mora in order to attend the celebrations of Eid el Maulud (Birth of Prophet Muhammed).

It was gathered that the insurgents slashed the throats of 11 occupants of the bus and injured some of the women. One of the victims reportedly managed to alert the police using his mobile telephone. The attack took place forty kilometres away from their destination (Mora).

The Mora region, a town which borders Nigeria and Cameroon, has for the past three months, been subjected to Boko Haram attacks almost on daily basis, causing dozens of civilian and military deaths.

Many residents of the town had been taken hostage by the sect in recent times while most houses have been burnt.

It was learnt that the recent attack was a reprisal of the killings of some members of the group by the Cameroonian military in recent weeks.

Confirming the incident, a Cameroonian investigative journalist, Bisong Etahoben, wrote on Twitter that some passengers were still missing.

“At the final casualty count of attack, 11 (persons) were killed, with their throats slashed while six were hospitalised in Mora with serious injuries,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Cameroonian authorities have said that they would be recruiting 20,000 military officers as part of measures to prevent further attacks by members of the sect.

The measure was taken as information emerged that the militant group was working to enlist young Cameroonians into the group.
