APC more interested in personal ambition – Presidency

The Presidency on Friday said the statement credited to the spokesman for the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, that President Goodluck Jonathan lacks the capacity to tackle insecurity and corruption was a sign that politics and personal ambition are more important to him and his masters.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said this in an interview with State House correspondents.

Abati said it was unfortunate that the APC spokesman was starting the year in that manner.

He said, “It is a pity that Lai Mohammed is starting off in the New Year mounting his habitual nonsense. Anybody who listened carefully to the President and has followed the activities of government closely will see very clearly that his administration is committed to fighting insurgency and corruption.

“It has also shown political will in strengthening the security process to deepen their capacity to win the war against terror.

“Many of our security agents have had to pay the supreme sacrifice in waging this war.

“When Lai Mohammed talks glibly about the efforts of government, he insults the memory and heroism of these patriots.

“President Jonathan has always appealed to the opposition not to play politics with issues of national security. Obviously politics and personal ambition are more important to Lai Mohammed and his masters.”

Abati insisted that the current administration was committed to fighting corruption.

He said the President decided to bring up the issue in the New Year in order to reemphasise the importance of the anti-graft war.

He said, “This administration is committed to fighting corruption and has always done so. By bringing up the issue in his New Year statement, the President was reemphasising the importance of the war against corruption.

“On New Year day, the President reemphasise the importance he attaches to the war against corruption and it is such a clear message that should not be too complicated for Lai Mohammed to understand.

“But he and his masters saw in that an opportunity to play cheap politics. What needs to be said is to refer Lai Mohammed to the President’s charge to the political class in the New Year message.”
