The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has warned Governor Ayodele Fayose to stop dragging the state civil servants into politics, saying such is dangerous to neutrality and professionalism in the civil service.
The party in a statement by its APC State Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, on Tuesday said declaring holiday for civil servants to enable them attend a political rally was against the tenets of civil service rule, which barred civil servants from direct partisan politics.
The APC was reacting to the alleged directive by the governor to workers making their attendance compulsory at the President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign rally in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.
But the Fayose’s Special Assistant on Indormation, Mr. Lanre Ogunsuyi, said the allegation was “arrant nonsense” because no worker was ordered to attend the rally.
“People have given such directive to workers in the past and it didn’t work. The allegation is arrant nonsense. No worker was compelled to attend the rally because they are adults. People went there on their volition.
“The Governor is loved by the people. He went to the streets on Monday to mobilise the people. Can you force a man to come to Ado-Ekiti from Igogo?
The opposition party praised civil servants who raised objections to the plan, saying that by maintaining their professional integrity, they had de
monstrated that their loyalty belonged to the state and not individuals holding political positions.
Olatubosun said Ekiti workers had become wiser not to sacrifice their professional careers and integrity on the altar of campaign deceits.
“The last time President Goodluck Jonathan visited Ekiti State during Fayose’s campaign rally, he said he would immediately start development projects in the state if Fayose won.
“After Fayose was declared winner, the Federal Government awarded N480 billion road contracts across the country. Ekiti State did not benefit from all these contracts.
“The only two federal projects in Ekiti over the years, the silo and 132/133kva electricity projects, have been abandoned. Fayose sacked workers and a list of others to be sacked is being prepared. He collected September allocation but refused to pay September salary to workers.
“If Fayose is sure the teachers love him, why is he forcing teachers into waiting buses as they arrived the schools to the campaign venue?
“The governor reversed the promotions of many workers and has abandoned even the members of his party that he deceived with juicy appointments. Are all these what he will present to the President for commissioning?”
The APC spokesman said it was regrettable that a President who created conditions of impunity for all these to happen came to the state again to deceive Ekiti people.
“What will President Jonathan tell the people after the man he foisted on the state had desecrated all the institutions of government? Fayose led thugs to beat the judges and court records in the Chief Judge’s office were torn while secretary was beaten black and blue.
“The governor sacked the House of Assembly where seven members are now a majority over the 19 members of APC. Elected representatives of the people are not allowed to voice their interests in the parliament. Are all these Ekiti people should celebrate by taking a holiday to welcome the President to Ekiti State?” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
