More policemen may be deployed in Borno State during next month’s general elections in order to avoid a breach of security by the Boko Haram insurgents, the state Commissioner of Police, Clement Adoda, said on Wednesday.
Speaking during a sensitisation meeting with political parties in Maiduguri, Adoda said, “There is the need for external support during the elections and I have talked to the Inspector General of Police on this.”
Adoda stated that the command was also looking at the possibility of seeking additional troops from other states to beef up security during the polls.
“I want to assure you of our readiness to ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections in the state. The Inspector General of Police is in constant touch with the command and has assured us of all the needed support to ensure a hitch-free election in the state,” he said.
Adoda added, “We are already considering the idea of getting external support from other commands to ensure that we have adequate security on the ground.
“What I mean is that we are looking forward to having deployment of Mobile Squadron from states like Lagos and Port Harcourt, where you have more that one squadron in place.”
He added that the military could be drafted to provide support should the situation degenerate.
“The military is always on standby in every situation. But if there is the need for the military assistance during the elections, be assured of our preparedness to invite the troops,” Adoda said.
The police commissioner said the troubled state could not afford to allow additional crisis as the Boko Haram menace had presented enough challenge.
“Should political crisis adds up to it, the state would be in chaos,” he added. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
